3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
New to the forum, thanks TN for all your help so far.
once Camry starts up there is a near emediate screeching in sequence with a drop in revs. repeats every 2 sec for about 8 sec till its stalls out. screech screech screech screech dead...
i replaced a suspected bad vacuum hose previous day after witnessing revs drop while idling(no screeching and could keep car from staling by giving gas). ran great couple days then screeching problem came up.
sounds like a massive vacuum leak. Have you tried to spary starting fluid around your vacuum lines, Intake Manifold, and Injectors to determine if you have a leak?
did the car do any screeching before this issue? screeching is usually something tied to the belts and pullies so i'm just trying to disect the problem.
its not the first sign of screeching, iv also been driving through a lot of snow recently...
haven't spray check for vacuum leaks yet, the engineering department at Umass has a gun sensor that detects air presser changes and iv been trying to get my hands on it.
If it is a belt(which it seems like it is) to a need to dig into my timing belt?
Nah, its not your timing belt screeching. Your timing belt is a V Belt. Its probably a serpentine belt (Flat) ... (Alternator or power steering)
toothed belt, v-belts got phased out in the early 90's, but check your power steering pump to see if anything has froze solid to it, the screeching is the belt slipping due to something not moving in the drive line and that causing it to stall, if you can try to get the car in a garage and put a space heater next to the passenger side wheel well and try to warm it up and melt what might be giving you the issue

^ and leaving it that way!
If it's been doing this before than it's not related to the vacuum hose.
Check the belt tension or a seized pulley. If it's the belt tension, maybe change out the belts too. When was the last timing belt job? Maybe do the whole complete timing job.

driving through snow... any chances one of your belts got wet (melted snow) and then frozen to pulley over night?
It happened on my '92 Buick, it was old belt, wasn't really loud, but there was a bald spot on it where it got frozen to pulley (and then ripped from it when engine started the next day)...
If drive belts (alternator and P/S) were not changed lately I would think about getting new ones, Good Year, Dayco, Bando, Mitsuboshi are all good names (all are or were OEM suppliers).

A slipping belt shouldn't cause stalling, unless your battery is too low and the alternator isn't generating enough power because its belt is slipping.
Another is a seized pulley. Like AC or Alt pulleys slowing down the engine.
OR the slipping was from the PS belt and something else caused the stalling.
