96 camry transmission not going forward

I have a '96 Camry 4 cylinder . The car will work in reverse, but won't work in Drive at all. Started a couple days ago tranny would get to high rpm then finely shift. Had a code scanner on and got a P0500 code<speed sensor>. would this sensor cause the car to not drive. thanks

Bad speed sensors could cause transmission issues. Can you try putting the shifter in 2 and L gears? What happens? When was the transmission serviced? What color is the fluid?

Also are you mechanically inclined? Maybe a visit to a car salvage yard (pick and pull) could yield a used speed sensor. Should be couple of bucks max. Try swapping it out with your current one.
Do you have the camry manual with you? Find them here http://www.t u r b o n i n j a s .com/camry/
If transmission has not been serviced in a while I would drop the pan and change out the transmission filter (a small pickup screen).
Hope that helps!

I don't know if this applies to your car, but on my 1993, when I disconnected the speed sensor the car drove but the speedo did not work (I only drove it less than a block).

the only thing a bad speed sensor would do on the 92-96 camry is make it go into Limp mode (It would shift erratically)

I would get a pressure Gauge and test how much pressure your transmission is putting out

Good point Perkins and 71 Corolla. OP did you try resetting the code and disconnecting the battery and see if the code returns? Also what other codes is the ECU throwing? Did some incident trigger this code? Tell us more about the car so TN can help you.

Is this an automatic or manual transmission?

I'm thinking shift solenoid.

Sounds like you have a Direct Clutch issue. There was another member on this forum who had the exact same problem, and he said it was his Direct Clutch. He actually installed the clutch packs in wrong too, so he had to re-do it twice. lol.

If you have any doubt, bring your transmission to a certified transmission shop and have them diagnose the exact problem with the transmission.
