Intermittent trans issue 92 v6

A few days ago i noticed that my transmission is not downshifting back to first after stopping. it will stay in second gear leaving me with no power. it will shift fine if i select L then to second and D as neccisary. and then sometimes it will shift fine for a while then go back to sticking in second. i think my overdrive light is out so i cant check if its throwing any codes that way. does anyone know if this is indicative of a shift solenoid issue or the kickdown cable out of adjustment or something? i think when its acting up and i have it in L it will immediatly shift to second if i select it even if it should be in first judging by my speed.

i dont have access to my shop manuals since im visiting some family. and im posting from my kindle on some bootleg wifi.

ISSUE RESOLVED: Faulty ECU

FSM Says

Shift Lock Solenoid
21–27 ohms

Try to disconnect the solenoid wire behind the NSS and manual shift through all gears. Make sure that all gears are shifting to corresponding position (L - 2 - D) If abnormal shifting occurs, the problem is in the transmission itself

The L and 2 positions engages an extra brake band. Maybe a clutch pack is going or solenoid problems.

good thing i keep a multimeter in the trunk. thanks for the info. i have to drive the ol pile of junk down to florida in a week or so. cant drop the pan here in new york with 3 feet of snow in the driveway and all my tools in florida. good thing its not slipping or shifting hard. verified all gears work fine as well as the overdrive since it doesnt light up. downshifts fine on highway when i mash the gas. upshifts smooth as well. figured it would be something electrical.

Ok so I fixed the O/D light and its giving me code 62, Shift solenoid #1. Measured the resistance of all the solenoids(from the plug on front of tranny) to ground, all have the same reading of about 17ohms. Manual says should be 11-15 ohms. So i guess ill have to pick up some new ones and drop the pan this weekend to see what going on up there.

There are some inconsistencies in the manual though. I have a 93 v6 tranny, so im using the es300 manual. diagrams show in the front of the tranny theres the selector switch connector, the solenoids 1 and 2 on the right(2 pin connector) and a third to the left of the selector. on mine i dont have the 3rd connector to the left, just the solenoid connector on the right with 3 wires.

well, I saw another post from someone who had the same problem, but wound up replacing the ECU instead. I checked the resistance of the solenoids from the harness at the ECU and they all show 13 ohms to ground which is within spec. I havent actually dropped the pan yet because im broke and cant afford to just throw parts at it now.

so what do you guys think, stuck solenoid or faulty ECU? I didnt see much about ecu diagnostics other than checking for proper power and ground in the factory manual.

trip report: solenoid replacement

i love how the factory service manual says just drop the pan, and disconnect the wires. they neglected to mention the solenoids are on top of the valve body, which of course all has to come out.

took me 6 hours, but it would have been an hour or 2 faster if i didnt put the entire valve body back in, then realize theres a small check ball on the floor next to me....GRRRRRR take it all back out and figure out where it fell out from.

so i fill her back up with fluid and bam...no change =( still code 62 pops up after i cleared the codes. must be the ECU dammit.

Issue resolved. Turns out it was a faulty ECU. My initial diagnosis as the solenoid was because:

A) the ECU code #62
B) the problem started out intermittent, symptomatic of a sticking solenoid.

I figured if the ECU went it would have just stopped working completely. I also compiled a short list of compatible ECU's for 3VZ-FE A/T here ECU Compatability for future reference.
