^ well hes right, this info can be had through a search but the search engine sucks and its an easy thing to answer.

both engines, V6 and 4cyl, had issues with sludge, the 4cyl a little more common then the 6. BUT, that was easily fixed and prevented by simply changing the oil at the regular times. other then that they really have very few issues. personally, if you can swing the extra cost the v6 is worth it, especially if you get an auto. the V6 more then makes up for it lower gas mileage with it's far better acceleration. i feel bad, no offense, for the guys who have to deal with the 5sfe auto when merging or changing lanes.

^ The 97-99's also had problems with the original upper strut mounts causing rattles when going over bumps. The only solution was to replace the upper strut mounts with a newer version Toyota designed to eliminate the problem, or go with aftermarket upper strut mounts. Obviously this requires removal and disassembly of the sturts. This can be a labor intensive job if you are not doing it yourself. Ask if the struts and/or the strut mounts were ever replaced on the cars you are looking at. As far timing belt change interval, it was 90,000 miles for these cars.
