Yep you need a new thermostat. Needle should be near the halfway point, say 45%. When I bought my '93 it had the exact same problem, temp gauge stayed about where yours is.

Check coolant level first. But probably a good idea to replace the Tstat if it hasn't been done recently.
coolant is full and its been at least 2 years for the tstat so yeah i'm doing it anyway...

Yeah, just get an oem thermostat with o-ring, also the o-ring for the inlet pipe.
how cant you have a lead foot with a v6 5 speed
i'm going to go with a aftermarket tstat as i will change it again this summer for a lower temp one for the supercharger...
the only reason why i want to change it now is that i want more heat in the cabin!!! also it must not help with mileage and performance...
going to change the coolant too with pretty oem red coolant

Make sure it has the jiggle valve, and its positioned at 12 0'clock, or else you have the same problem. In fact in my case OEM was cheaper than aftermarket. So check prices first.

well my buddy who works at toyota ordered me one this morning lol he just told me
Pull the temperature gauge sender at the water outlet pipe and see if the gauge shows full hot.
Besides coolant level also double check the reading of the ECT sensor. Take an ohm reading and look it up on the chart for the temperature. If it's low it's the t-stat.

You mean the temp gauge doesn't move? You have to check the gauge first.
For example, pulling the connector at the gauge sender unit on the water outlet should make the needle peg to full hot. If it doesn't do that check the gauge circuit.
