Weird transmission behaviour

2000 Camry 4-cyl. When the car is cold, the car goes from 1st gear to high gear fine, but after a few miles it starts exhibiting the following behaviour....

When I'm stopped, and begin accelerating, the transmission acts like it's in 2nd or 3rd gear....like it's slipping...and has no power. when it gets up to like 5 mph it will jump into 2nd gear and move on normally. to get around the problem, I've been putting the transmission in 1st gear (L) manually, then moving to (D) once I'm moving...and this works fine.

any ideas?

sounds simple enough....and thanks for the reply! Is there a quick adjustment procedure someone can provide?

look at the tb you should see 2 cables, one goes to the cruse control (or firewall if no cruse) and the other to the trans, one going to the trans just loosen the nut closest to the end of the cable and adjust it till the cable is taunt, remember tighten the other nut so your corrections will stay

tb? I'm sorry....but I don't know what that stands for. I looked under the hood, and saw cables going to a circular device on top of the motor. Those cables weren't very loose though. Perhaps someone could post a picture of what it is I need to adjust...

tb= Throttle Body, mechanism where the intake hose connects to.

I adjusted that one last night, even though it didn't feel like it had much slack in it, and the car is still acting funny. should i tighten it some more?

I know Chronoti said it was the 'kick down cable'...but what does this cable do? (I feel better when I understand what's going on lol) Looks like it disappears into the tranny...

How old is the fluid and filter? mileage? maintenance history?
