typical '93 2.2L Camry rpm at 65 mph

curious...what should rpm be for a '93 2.2L Camry at around 60-65 mph? I seem to be around 3200, which seems high but not really a car guy...my '09 Highlander runs about 2200 at highway speed...on the Camry, would it help to set OD on? Any info most appreciated

O/D should ALWAYS be on at highway speeds (unless you need to make an aggressive pass, etc). Why do you have it turned off?

2,200 rpm is right on spot with 5s-fe at 65mph. O/D light should be OFF on dash (overdrive gear allowed).

at around 80mph you should see ~3k rpm at steady cruise.

OP
The RPM for 2.2 L engine at 3200 seems unusually high, unless you are running crazy bigger wheels.
Your highlander may well be a V6 engine and its normal for that engine to achieve 65 mph at 2200 RPM.
What I would do is check the below:
-Tire pressure?
-O/D mode on or off?
-Clean up throttle body (excellent DIYs available on TN)
-Clean up EGR valve (Excellent DIY available on here)
-Change automatic transmission oil
Please share with us maintenance history and other details such as miles etc.

maintenance, miles etc for high rpm '93 Camry

overdrive is on, car has about 160K. oil changed every 3-4000 miles or 3-4 months since car was new. had transmission fluid and filter changed in Oct '09 at 151K miles. Tire pressure is right about 34 psi, which I think is correct. Hope this provides helpful info...appreciate all the feedback...like I mentioned earlier, I'm not really a car guy...do alot of woodworking, so can work with my hands, just don't know much about cars...if told what to do, can probably do it, just can't diagnosis stuff myself...one thing that may have an impact...car sits for about 6 mos each summer when I go to summer home and I don't do anything to "summerize" it...could this mean anything?

thanks again

My 94 2.2 is around 2800 RPM at 70 MPH. Your 3200 RPM at 60-65 is high. Next time you have the opportunity, try to feel if the car is shifting into 4th gear (overdrive) at those speeds. You should not only feel it shift, but you should also be able to see the tack drop down a bit when it does go into overdrive.
