96 camry tranny problem need HELP

alright so the tranny has no reverse it acts like it wants to go but dosent,and neutral is a forward gear now it will drive in neutral all the other gears work fine i just dont really know anything about transmission but i talk to some people and they said it could be the linkage or transmission control module but i figured ill come to you guys cause sites for enthusiast is better than anywhere else so please any help would be nice gonna work on it this weekend

hmm...sounds like the shifter cable is not adjusted right. never herd of something dramatic like that.

Only other thing I could think is your NSS is way out of adjustment. I dont even know if it could go that far out of adjustment. lol. Does it start fine when in "P" or "N"?

yea it starts fine in park i havent tried neutral tho idk im gona change the linkage this weekend and see whats happens then but please keep giving me ur guys thought and thanks for replying cause im more of a nissan guy i dont kno anything bout toyota trans at all let alone trans

My van did the same thing before the transmission blew up, Neutral was 1st gear also and Reverse was Park kinda of, haha. It wouldn't move, just revved only to 1800rpm.

i dont think changing out the linkage will change anything. Especially if the linkage is all tight where it connects to the NSS Shaft. You could try to adjust the linkage either up or down on the arm off the NSS?

ok i was gonna try to adjust the linkage its self and see what tht did and then change it if tht didnt help and the NSS is the neutral safety switch correct ,thanks again and if so were is the nss i think i read something about it earlier being by the shifter itself

alright so the linkage and the cable were fine and NSS,i used a code checker and it threw out first shift solenoid but im taking it friday to a shop and haven them use there checker and see what they say so after friday i hopefully will know what is wrong and i will tell you guys, maybe help someone in the future if this comes up again thanks again for your guy's input
