Value of a 1998 camry

How much would a 70k mile l4 1998 camry LE be worth trading into the dealer?

Should i try to buy this car from someone for 4k or less?

Thanks in Advance

1998 with 70,000 miles...probably 4K or under.

I paid 4.5K for mine (97 with 77K miles) and that was a bit over, but it was so nice on the outside and clean inside it was worth it. I see people sell 150,000 miles on a 97/98/99 Camry on Craigslist for about 3.5K sometimes...it's literally ridiculous.

It also depends on where you live.

Yea i live in Los Angeles area.... my friend is thinking he can probably get 5k trade in for it.... but i highly doubt it and may be able to take it off for some price between trade in value and private party value...

But i dont want to rain on his hope for now.. or offer somethign too low or too high...

you can always negotiate a deal with dealerships. That's why they have salesmen. They have Bottom dollar values that they offer.

They usually can get away with offering less than the vehicle is actually worth though, and the reason for this is because people don't argue .. they just say OK.

take it to the dealer, and talk the car down, and the price of the trade in up. If they really want to do business they will agree. If not, say thanks for your time and take the car elsewhere. Saying Thanks for your time is the last chance.. Sometimes the salesmen will say "Wait a second... this is what i can do".

I'd be amazed if you got anything close to kbb trade-in value for a 98. More likely you'll get what they can sell it to an auction house for or Black Book value. That seems to be what most dealers do for any car more than about 7 years old.

My guess would be under $3k. If they offer more than that, it's just coming out of the new car price or the financing.

The dealer will make it LOOK like he's getting big money for his car on trade by playing the new car discount shell game with him.

Bottom line, he won't get more than 3 grand in actual trade in... if that.

So true. Dealer is not going to take a loss on any deal if they can help it.

Edmunds used car trade-in value comes out to about $2100 for an average condition Camry LE I4.

Do let us know what the dealer quotes.

Another reason not to sell a used car while buying a new one.

Sell it privately. Youll get more money since used car dealers have seriously gone stupid since the whole cash for clunkers.

I see pieces of junk going for 8-9k that used to cost 5-6k just a couple years ago. Its just hilarious.

If buyers don't pay the inflated prices, the "junk" won't sell. Most of these overpriced cars for what they're worth go to places where buyers either have bad or no credit and can't afford a new car or to make a large down payment for a car, but still need transportation for work, errands, family, etc.

So the dealer offered my friend 3.5k for his camry which is actually a 1999 CE with 67k miles. However, the dealer wasnt able to agree on a price for the new car he wanted to buy so he just walked out. He then sold the car to me for 3k

Gen5 camry

It really depends on where you live and what the market is like out there. Personally I would try to sell it private part and ask high book if its clean. Those cars are some of toyotas hallmark cars and they are built very well. Ask high book.

Better off selling on your own instead of trade in, I have a 99 I4 that just hit 59,000, people come up to me all the time and ask if I'm selling it, these cars sell themselves if they are well kept.

I paid $5500.00 for my 1998 Camry with 80,000 miles on it. KBB had it listed in my area for a little over $5000.00. It was in excellent condition and very well taken care of. I am happy with it but I guarentee the dealer will come nowhere close. KBB will tell you what the dealer should be paying or close to it.
