98 Camry keeps dying at stoplights!

I'll keep this short and sweet

I bought a 98 Camry from a friend of mine, and its been decent. Recently, it started to die at stopsigns/stoplights. It'll do this unless I put it into neutral (its an automatic) and give it gas...and sometimes if I let off the gas it stays revved at around 2000 RPMs for a short while.

It seems sporadic, but occurs more often on warmer days. I so far can always re-start it after it dies, but it makes me a little worried.

Ive searched around online and found different ideas of what it could be, but I dont have a ton of money for guess work cuz i work part time and go to school.

Any ideas? It'd be a HUGE help!

Could be a lot of things man... Do you happen to have a repair manual handy and a digital multimeter?

I'd suggest first checking and roughly cleaning the Idle Air Control Valve (IACV).

example here:

then go from there.

Nice! thanks dude.

Seems to be smoother so far, but I dont want to get too optimistic yet.

How much Deep Creep should I use? I read thru the link but it didnt specify. Is it safe to basically just soak the inside with Seafoam...let it sit...then fire it up?

Never had a problem stopped at a light (which was odd). But my 94 died on the freeway one night out of the blue as i was slowing down. It turned out to be the IACV. I'd check that out first.

I basically soaked it. I tried it with the car running as well and it would act like it wanted to die for a second.

After that, I took it for a run. Basically every stopsign for the first few blocks it died out which was frustrating...so I took it out on the freeway.

Since then, it hasnt died again so I dunno....maybe the initial dying after the cleaning is normal?

Hopefully its good now.

It is normal. There is still some of the cleaner in the system which is buring off for the first few minutes or so.
