4th Generation Button Question?

I have a question about a button on the gearbox. It is not the O/D button, but another one. It has no marking as to what it is, I've tried pushing it but nothing happens/turns on. What is this button, and why would they put a random button on the gearbox?
PS my car is a 2001 V6

i believe it is the traction control button. IIRC it was only avalible on the V6. My 97 had one but no button, just a blank black piece of plastic in the shape of a button.

Its not traction control, thats next to the dimmer switch... I've heard of a power button, but nothing happens when I press the button...

It's the shift lock button. It basically lets you shift from park to any other gear without having to turn on your car or no battery etc.

Exactly what I thought it was. That's the shift lock button, use it when you need to get the lever out of park without the keys in the ignition. There is supposed to be a cover over it.

edit: DM616 beat me to it, but yeah that's what it is.
