3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I had a hiatus for about a year off this wonderful forum because my Acura required me to join a forum to fix it's issues.
It's been a long year with my Acura, with everything from new heads to new blower motors, three to be exact.
But this is about my G3 Camry, I still feel so much better about my Camry, it's been in my possession since 1 miles, when I was 1, and it has been my mother's car ever since. Nothing quite equates to the experience of my G3. The smell of it, the sound of the 5SFE... everything, I could just go on and on.
It's a treat to swap cars in a while and drive my Camry, the smooth shifts are amazing, as my Legend should be called "slap shift" with her quick abrupt shifts. Or due to the "OEM Sport Suspension" and bigger wheels, I feel every bump. & we as Camry owners know we get "abuse" because of the Camry's numb steering or numb suspension, but it sure is luxurious.
I guess the point of this is to LOVE YOUR CAMRY! My Legend has gone through more parts in less than a year than my Camry in a life time. Surely she isn't flashy but, the irony is: What a car is supposed to be, the Camry is.
Because at the end of the day, no matter what your Camry looks like, it is a DRIVER'S CAR, notice the Climate Control and Radio buttons, the curve out to meet you, the driver's seat is the **** pit. To date the G3 Camry is the most Lexus like, and is more luxurious than my "luxury car". Sure I have heated seats and digital automatic climate control, but the sheer isolation in our Camry's are awe inspiring, makes you wonder why there isn't Lexus badges on the Camry.
I guess through my rambling, I just want to get at the sheer excellence that our vehicles were built according to.
Whenever you call on a Camry, it answers!
(Excuse the rambling, trust me, it was necessary. )

You've got some low mileage cars! I am surprised to hear your experiences with the Legend... I was a Honda guy myself before coming over to Toyota and the Honda's I've had were very reliable.
Thanks for the ramble, I'll give mine a hug before driving home from work.
There's something about the Gen3 that is like a 'mile stone' that Toyota hit with it. It's a good sized car with enough space and power for the most out there. quality is top. It also still looks good.
Likewise,
I have an 1985, and 15 years from that date (2000), there wasn't a lot around. I guess not so much being it wasn't reliable, but the body rusts out hella fast.... (anyone who owns a Gen1 or Gen2 knows this), but for the Gen3, anything 15 years from it (2007 +), there still a LOT on the roads here, of course being replaced more and more with the Gen4, but thankfully toyota decided to have the 5SFE as a very long used engine platform (wish I could say the same with the earlier 3VZ-FE camry engine...) and the 1MZFE, so engine parts will be availible a LONG time...
I also have to point out that all the Gen3 and above, the body seems to have different materals as they don't ROT out super fast like the older Toyota's
I'd love to own a Gen3...but I got enough cars as is. Thankfully, one of my friends and her family owns all toyotas now (I got them to get all toyotas...lol). She has a 1995 LE V6 with 258K (keep in mind this is an ISLAND) along with her sister having a 1994 XLE V6 with 210K, Her dad having a 1998 Corolla LE with 149K and her younger brother having a 1996 XLS Avalon with around 130K. I do fixes and basic maintances on all their cars
I think we definately have the Lexus Division to thank for this car. Toyota had to establish a new bench mark for their "Baby Lexus", ES300, to draw entry level owners into their "New" brand. The gen 3 Camry benefited from this platform in a way that few manufacturers have since. Think about it, Nissan tried to back engineer a lame G20 from the Altima platform, VW tried to guessy up a few Audis from Jetta and Passat platforms. Every since about the time of the gen3 it has been done the other way. Build the platform to meet the standards of the big buck gussed up Brand, then change a little sheetmetal, and hold back a couple swishy options from the meat and potato division,.

Amen. My car has been in the family since KM:000001. Crazy innit? I couldn't help but laugh when a couple of years ago I think it was, I was driving, my dad was in the passenger seat and my mom in the rear, I couldn't help but chuckle. I have so many memories in my car, from roadtrips as a kid, to moving to college to my first date, my first drive to my introduction to major automotive work, this car has seen my thru it. And it never refused to start when I called.
To me, it's just one of those undervalued cars... For some reason, they just NEVER DIE, no matter how much you abuse them! And it's weird, everyone who has owned a Gen 3/3.5 has ALWAYS has a special place in their heart for it. I have a feeling that the day I will part with my car will be a tough day for me...
I think it's also important that we thank the people here, in this community, who have helped each other when we needed helped. From my perspective, you guys have been great. None of what I did would have been possible without you guys!

I know that feelin'. I got a special place in my heart for my Gen1. Been through SO much...geez, I can't even begin to start, lol.
It's hard, not impossble. Decisions, decision. I mean........I turned down getting a pretty much mint one-of-a kind '83 GEN1 with EVERYOPTION that was optional (sunroof...premium audio...alloys...two tone) ...for my '85 DELUXE...too much memories
