Unhappy 3RD Gen 2.2l Engine Swap PROBLEMS

I am brand new member and this is my first post, so go easy on me hehe! I had first received this project with good intentions. I bought this car from the local High School Auto Shop to support them, and planned on putting a new motor in it and selling very cheep to a friend. This was to benefit all parties. The car is a 1995 Camry 2.2l with 227k on it, with a hole in the side of the block. Besides that, the car is loaded, beautiful, automatic, and everything works. The motor i bought for it was out of a 1993 Camry. (2.2l, automatic) I was sure that they would mate right up. The new engine came with the wiring, all sensors, power steering pump, and everything (just no distributer), so i thought PIECE OF CAKE! Upon further inspection, i noticed that the wiring was all different, the fuse box was different, the exhaust manifold was different.... =| ... among other things. I was in for a little more work than i intended. After days of hard work tearing out the old motor, stripping the wiring from both, swapping the old wiring over, changing oil pressure sending unit, coolant temp sensor, alternator, A/C pump, exhaust manifold, EGR valve, and getting the transmission onto the new motor, things started to come together nicely. At this point i have had a lot of freaking hours into this car, a whole bunch of new gaskets and parts, and just wanted it out of my garage, but I really don't want to sell it because i will end up losing money. At this current point in time, The car is 100% together, everything is hooked up, everything is working, but when i start it up, it makes a horrible grinding noise. I had figured maybe the starter was staying engaged, so i had it tested. It is not the starter staying engaged. I figured maybe the starter needs to be shimmed, and I've tried washers and everything and nothing has changed the noise. I am now thinking that maybe it is the transmission making the noise? The input shaft lined right up, and and transmission bolted right up to the new 1993 block with no problem, i assumed they were the same. Now i am starting to second guess myself and I am open to any suggestions as to where this noise could be coming from! Please feel free to throw anything at me, I will tell you if i have experienced it or not. THANKS GUYS AND GALS! TN

when you installed the trans on the engine did you use your stock flywheel or the one that came on the engine? also did you put the big dust shield between the engine and trans? that also acts as a shim to space the engine from the trans. is it a constant noise or does it sort of pulsate? if it's constant then i would be inclined to think that you forgot to put on somethin that spaces things apart. if the noise goes up and down then i would say something (flywheel maybe) is bent. good luck.

I did in fact put everything back the way it came apart. The new motor came with the flywheel already attached, and the shim between the block and tranny already attached. I did not take off either to swap, to save myself some time and effort. Couple i maybe place shims between each bolt mating surfaces and see if that does anything? I also want to add that i haven't topped off the transmission fluid since i put it back in, but i don't believe that would bring forth a problem, right? Does anyone know if the 93 and 95 both use the same transmission?
