USA '95 Camry Starting Problems

I'm having trouble starting my '95 Toyota Camry. When I turn the key to accessories, the radio, wipers, horn, etc work fine. But when I try and start the engine, the car makes a clicking noise and won't start.

I got my battery recharged, and tried it again, but it did the same thing. The terminals and cables look fine IMO.

Could someone please advise on what could be wrong? What should I do next? What is the clicking sound I'm hearing?

Thanks!

It's the click of doom, run fast and far!

Really it just sounds like the starter has failed, specifically the contacts. The solenoid is engaging but power is not reaching the motor itself.

Thats used to happen to me too, I just took out the terminals to the battery, sanded them down and painted the non contact part.
This is probably the contacts though, but make sure all connections are tight and clean first.

Thanks for the info... I really appreciate it. I cleaned my battery contacts and terminals, so I don't think I have a problem there.

So do I replace my starter now? I'm guessing I should buy the Toyota part and not the Autozone brand (Duralast). Please let me know...

Thanks again...

Did you also check the ground to the chassis? That could be corroded and cause the same sort of issues.

Did you remove and clean the connections at the starter? Wouldn't hurt to check the starter relay as well. You can remove the starter and get it bench tested at Autozone.

Buy new, not rebuilt. Duralast brand has some good stuff. Can't go wrong with Toyo but how long you plan on keeping this car and what is warranty of Duralast and Toyo as well as price difference?

check the battery voltage as well. if it is below 11V than your starter is not going to crank the engine, instead you will be hearing that dreaded clicking/ticking sound repeatedly.

last time I heard it on my wife's car it was weak battery that got drained while she waited in car with shut off engine and lights on (just 15 minutes was enough to immobilize the car).

on crank attempt the battery voltage was plummeting down to 2V.
