a140e diff question

hello I am going through an a140e trans with 200k miles on it and am trying to check the diff without removing it. The service manual says to check side gear backlash you hold one pinion gear against the case while rotating the side gear you are checking but the side gears have up and down movement in the carrier and you cannot get a reading because of this.I know you can install an axle shaft into the side gear and this would help center it but still mine will be way out of spec. The book says backlash should be .002-.007 in. All gears, thrust washers and components look good/no metal in oil/ and no noise before diss tell me to leave it alone but if anyone has experience with these diffs input would be greatly appreciated. thanks
