What in the world??? Tranny.

Ok, so im very mechanically inclined, and actually put the current trans and engine in this car, but this is just boggling my mind.

Engine: 1MZFE
Tranny: Auto 4spd

Last night, after a 50 mile drive in CO, not cold, no special conditions or anything, no check engine lights, no nothing, as I was parallel parking I lost reverse. Turns out I lost 1, 2, 3, 4 as well. So I towed my car to buddy's house, and then put it back in drive, and IT WORKED!!! I haven't driven it yet, because im paranoid, but anyone have any idea how mysteriously this happened? me and my buddy were stumped.

Sounds: Initial "squeek" (sounds like pneumatics almost) followed by light griding noise, light)

Warm, right after the drive within 5 minutes.

Actually, we thought about the cable, but didnt see any obvious adjustment apparati, recommendations? the shifter actually felt a little tight when the tranny was put in about 10k ago...

edit: Just tested it again, cold, and it went back to the non-existant park and gears.

I found a thread on it. I will check the cables and refer back. Thanks again bigbird

edit edit: ok, well i checked the cables, and they are fine. It shifts ok, but now when i put it into drive, the speedo registers. I am thinking this is a blown tranny, but then again, i am a catastrophizer...

lots of reading:
possible sources:
bad axle
bad diff
torque converter (but would the speedo register then?)
diff fluid (maybe dry?)
