3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Ok it's a 94 , with the 2.2 in it 97 grand on it. Interiors nice, but needs
Tires, front fender. And the water pump housing cracked
Got it for 400 dollars
What do you think?????
By the way, 400 sounds excellent. Although you will definitely need to take care of that coolant leak. Make sure you don't overheat it while you're getting it fixed. If the engine runs fine I'd just check the head gasket. Look for white smoke when you start the engine, as well as white gunk/whitish oil on the oil dipstick. If you want to really get in depth you could perform a leakdown test or a coolant hydrocarbon test.
check the cylinder compression for starters, if it checks out (min 142psi, normal around 172psi, up to 220psi is not unusual on dirty engines)
If you decided to get it repaired, do a complete timing job with all gaskets and seals while replacing the WP housing (and pump itself).
what bothers me about a cracked WP housing is why it happened in first place ... and I can actually think of only 1 reason and you are not gonna like it. there most likely was water only in cooling system during Winter, so when it turned into ice (and expanded) as temperatures fell it cracked the housing... what gives ... possible HG and radiator damage from ice.
once WP housing is fixed, do a cooling system pressure test (with all spark plugs removed) and see if all holds and there is no coolant squirting from anywhere (like cylinders or side of engine block).
how is your oil looking like now? if white & milky then the HG is blown.

Better hope that if the motor did freeze, it didnt crack the water jacket inside the motor. Check the condition of the freeze plugs. if they are weeping you may have internal damage to the motor. Still cant beat the price of $400.00 . If the motor is bad, you can replace the motor with a good one and have a reliable car for years and years with proper up-keep
I agree, even if motor is on its last legs then the swap would be a good option. OP has nice car's body and no signs of trans failures, so it might pay off for long years to come... if properly maintained.

Thanks for all the help guys, now what exactly do you mean by weeping
And where are the freeze plugs located
Sorry Im a newbie haha
Weeping means leaking antifreeze around the outside edge :
There are 4 on the back side, 4 on the front, and one on the timing side, and one on the rear main seal side.
all together 10.
Pictures:
Back side of motor :
Front side / Rear Main Seal Side. As you can see on the picture, where the motor is mounted, there is a shiny freeze plug located just behind the mounting plate
Any number of things could cause the whining sound. Please read through the wealth of info on TN.
Later you can post specific questions about diagnostic tests that members will recommend you to perform on the engine. If possible grab a manual for your camry. Read up as much as you can.
Trust me it will be one fun ride here on TN
