Locked up Motor Pulled out of Car

I finally got my engine pulled out of the car. It looks like someone was working on it recently.

The engine is locked up, but I would like to separate the tranny from the engine block. I can't get to all the bolts holding the torque converter to the drive plate. If I remove the Transmission to engine block bolts will the tranny separate from the block, leaving the torque converter attached to the drive plate?

I don't think the oil has been changed on this car for a long time. The people I purchased the car from got it for free from an uncle, so I don't think there was any motivation to do any up-keep on the Camry. There appears to be sludge deposits under the valve cover.

Fresh grease applied to the cam by somebody...

Sludge deposits?

I will try to find out what is wrong with it when I get it on an engine stand.

Yes you can pull the trans off with the torque converter still attached to the flex plate. It will come off. Then you just need to rotate the flex plate with a pry bar or something to get to all 6 or 8 bolts holding the torque converter on then it should just fall off or maybe need some prying.

The t/c is at least 8 inches deep, you need to pull the motor and trans as a unit if you can't get at the bolts. It will make a huge mess when you seperate them as you'll have the engine at sharp angle to remove it w/the the tc attached. I would pull them as s unit.

That is one sad looking engine. . .

I went to one of the local wrecking yards today. They have a 1997 cylinder head without cams for $28. I can get a Four Cylinder Engine from a 1996 with 125,000 for $188 or a Four Cylinder Engine from a 1997 with unknown miles from a fire damaged engine compartment for $188. All the wires, plastics, and battery are melted.
My car is a 1997

The 96 and 97 are identical since both are obd2. Go with the 96 and split it open and do full gasket kit. It'll save you a lot of trouble if a seal goes bad later on.

The upper end of this motor is pretty bullet proof. Ill bet you if you soaked your sludged head in kerosene for a few days it would work. But if new engien comes with head just use that.

The 1996 looked pretty good, except for the distributer, I think mine has coil packs or something similar.
Could I take the 1997 head and put it on the 1996 block without too much trouble.

The biggest problem I see at the junk yard is no battery and no keys with digital odometers.

Yeah but for 188$ thats an amazing deal. Yeap you can swap heads, its been done before.

Technically the 97 might be a better gamble since the car was junked because of a fire and not something mechanical. In general if these cars are in a junkyard they were either totaled or tranny/engine conked out. Rust/other issues dont kill these things.
