E53/E153 and auto diff swap questions

I'm guessing I can swap the diffs of E-series transmissions (E153 into E53 for instance, provided they're both wide or narrow according to what I've read), but can I swap diffs between certain automatic and manual transmissions?

no, between auto and manual for what i know

kinda no on the e153, there were 4 different versions (short,tall,4wd,rrwd) and i think toyota made 3 non interchangeable differentials with a small minor difference to drive you nuts, aftermarket (trd, kazz) differentials are interchangeable on the e153's

Have you ever heard of anyone trying the manual/auto diff swap? The difference between the short/tall is the width of the gears right? I've also never heard of a rwd E153 but info is hard to come by online.

Play with cars in the junk yard. That's the way to figure this out.

I wish I could, but E153s are few and far between around here. I do see S53s (or whatever are in the 4cyl MT 3rd gens) occasionally, so if those are the same as an E153 in terms of swapping the diffs then I can spend a day or two there and fine out what fits what, but if they aren't I would just be wasting my time.

^ It's the same tranny chronoti... you should know that. The shift linkage is a smidge different, IIRC... but they CAN be interchanged.

^ Yep. Although you have to be careful... not all of them come with the LSD.
