making a 1999 camry more fun

so I've now got my wife's old Camry as a DD. its got 240K on it, and automatic, 2.2 4 cyl, and a WORN OUT suspension. i did put new struts on it a few years ago....

The damn thing just wont die. except for it being cranky on cold mornings (a few electrical gremlins and a bad IAC), and that its let her sit at walmart a few times, there's nothing wrong with it. my dad was the original owner, and its been properly maintained.

so after loosing my 2002 legacy 2.5GT to her, and selling my open track prepped s10 daily, I'm stuck with my two choices of 89 Chevy full size long bed extended cab, or the Camry for my daily. id rather drive the truck, but at 18MPG, it makes more sense to drive the Camry.
so i want it to suck less.

heres my thoughts (and remember, no budget, I've done no research, and its a freaking worn out Camry, so anything HAS to be a step in the right direction)
  1. replace ALL the bushings in the suspension. I'm thinking polyurethane of i can find them
  2. bigger sway bars (off of what?)
  3. lowering. it needs to come down a bit. tires are still in great shape, though, so ill be keeping the 14's for now. and they're Michelin's.
  4. some nifty 14" mags
  5. bigger stereo (stock tape deck just doesn't cut it. needs at least a CD player)
  6. any other budget handling mods?
after the chassis and comfort stuff, id like to get better gas mileage and performance out of the old 4 cyl (and a 5 speed swap is NOT an option) i was thinking about a bigger throttle body, header, and exhaust system, but cant seem to find anything like that with a quick search of Ebay. any ideas?

lastly, any other avenues to make this thing suck less? if i succeed well enough, i WILL autocross and rally cross it. my main goal long term is to have some fun while driving a boring car, and see this thing rack up 400K on the origonal motor, without a rebuild.

Autocross/rally cross and 400k miles on original motor rebuild should not be in the same sentence.

1. lower with struts (I have a 99 I4 with tockico blue struts and H&R Sport springs)
2. Whitelines, Ultra Racing RSB
3. Strut tower bar (I'm actually getting one in the morning via fedex all the way from Malaysia for 110.00 shipped and I'm getting it in 4 days)

If you'd like I'll let you know how much of a difference it makes.

heres a link for a ultra racing rear sway bar off of ebay (I haven't found any whiteline bars for sale for our cars anywhere lately for some reason idk why)

I deem the above info to be good. Get an engine tune up first though just to 100% sure everything is okay.

ive already done the plugs, wires, PCV, Timing belt/water pump, drive belts, etc. im pretty anal about maintinance.

and ill probably wind up killing the original motor out on track. im OK with that, though. i probably wont do but a couple of sessions a year with it. this years primary ride is a 70 plymouth duster. (autocross only).

thanks for the ebay links. what search criteria are you using? i didnt turn up any of that syuff.

and id love a report on how the strut tower bar does when i put one in my old CRX, it didnt do much of anything.

Little issue with installation when I tighten it down it hits the bracket for the throttle cable. Idk what I'm supposed to do

Move the bracket. Shave the bracket. Or deal with it haha

hmm....

i think ill focus first on the suspension side of things. and finding a more comfortable set of front seats. any other cars bolt in?

i put a couple hundred miles on it in the last few days. worst parts are the suspension and seats. rest is mostly tolerable (got a cassette adapter for my MP3 player)

You can move the Throttle cable by bending or moving the throttle cable bracket. Be sure to take up any slack in the cable though

OP you're not too far from me! I'm in Charlotte.

Anyway, any seat can be made to fit...provided you adapt the sliders to them.
