Need help! Disconnected Oil Pressure Switch?

Hi guys! I'm new here. Recently bought a 1995 Toyota Scepter off another backpacker in NZ.

I was looking at the engine today and I noticed that a plug was not connected to anything. It looked like the wire had been cut. I haven't got my camera to take a picture of the plug, but its the circled one in the following picture I found on wikipedia:

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

After digging through the forum I found the service manual and think it is the oil pressure switch, but I'm not sure, being a car newbie.

Could someone in the know confirm this, and advice me if I should get this fixed/re-connected? What will happen if I leave it as it is, disconnected? The car has been driving fine (mainly city/urban driving this week)

Thanks in advance people!

You are right, it's the oil pressure switch. I'm surprised the oil light on the dash is not on. Since you just bought this car I'd try to find out why this was left inoperable. I'd also do an oil pressure test before hooking up the switch.

That's another good reason to test the oil pressure with a mechanical gage.

Protonid,

Get the car to a shop where they can remove that oil pressure sending unit and screw in a mechanical gage. They will then test the oil pressure at various RPM's and compare it to spec.
