1mz leaky rear valve cover gasket

Any tips on engine block sealants? I just had the front valve cover gasket replaced, but it's slightly leaking in the rear. Any tips on products? Pre-oil change additives? Specific types of oil thats not the conventional type?

I drive an 00 1mz Lara with 135k mi's

Best fix is to also replace the rear valve cover gasket. But you probably already know that.

How bad is the leak? I can see some oil under both valve covers, but don't have to add oil between oil changes, so I am not going to touch it.

You could use a thicker oil to possibly reduce the leak.

the cover bolts may lose tension, causing leaks too. Some add a washer or two, or get new bolts with new gasket.

That's you're best option.

I would get new washer if and when you do decide to replace the seal

This is something you can do yourself, but just be prepared for a longer job. When I did this, the rear took me about 4 hours, but I had never done a valve cover job before.

Hate to say it, but the rear valve cover gasket should probably be replaced. I hope that washers on the bolts will help, but thats a bit of wishfull thinking. I took about a 10 year and two car generation break in doing such repairs to Toyota's and it took me about 8hrs to do (with lots of cleaning and additional replacement of parts), while I was in there on my 3VZ-FE. I think the 1MZ is similar in the fact that is a bugger to do, but there is no good substitute for not "just doing it". Sorry..

Silent Runner, I'm going to replace the gasket on the rear valve cover also. The Haynes manual says to remove the air intake and the throttle body as one unit. Is this how you did it ?
