My Crank pully exploded

So, my battery light came on when I was leaving from a friends house and I figured that I'd either need a new alternator or battery and that I would deal with it in the morning, so I drove home and went to bed. Next morning, went out and popped the hood (figured maybe the old belt just snapped and It'd be a cheaper fix than an alternator or battery) Turns out my crank pulley came separated from itself. So, after $109 at auto-zone I got a new crank pulley and rented a puller and got it popped on with some help from some friends. Has anyone else had this happed? Where the pully / harmonic balancer tear apart from each other? I thought it was a rather odd thing to happen.

Also, now that I've got the new pulley and belt on I have this odd clattering / rattling sound coming from the area, but I cant figure out whats causing it. Any ideas?

NEW on left, OLD on right:

It happens with age...mine went on my 22RE on my 1985 Celica convertible. I found it completely separated just like yers.

Well I fixed the rattling sound I had, I just took it to the shop and gave the guy $5 to impact the crank retaining bolt on and that fixed the problem. Also, now with the new balancer / pully I've noticed my car no longer makes the metal on metal clattering sound it used too and the engine is much smoother. The new pully + Gen 4 "dogbone" mount = ultra smooth engine. :-D

Also, I'd like to thank everyone at TN for the advice on using a breaker bar on the ground and tapping the ignition to break loose the crank bolt. That right there made the entire job MUCH easier. Now I'm confident on working on the front of the engine for when I replace my oil pump seal.
