How much did you pay for your customized y-pipe on your 3vz-fe?
After having read a number of posts about the ability to gain a significant amount of power by scrapping the stock unit and going with a custom made unit I can't get the idea of a custom fabbed y-pipe out of my head. I then got to wondering what others have paid to have this done. After taking one look at that factory y-pipe I can't help but to wonder why in the world toyota would have used such a poor design other than maybe to get more heat closer to the 02 sensor for emmission light out purposes because any monkey can tell that the current design is so far from efficient airflow that its retarded.
I have no means of making this thing myself so I'll of course be at the mercy of a local shop to get the job done for me. I was wanting to know what you guys paid to have a shop fab one up for you and implement it into the rest of your exhaust system?
I'm also wanting to run the Borla pro Xs muffler I believe it is that "Toysrme" reccommends in several threads that I've searched but have noticed there are a few different versions of that muffler available through summit. (Single center in/dual out...single center in/ offset single out.) The ones I see on Summits site are 2.5" intakes. So will 2.5" exhaust pipes be required as well? 2.5" seems a bit large to me but what do I know. It would be awesome if anybody had a model # to the exact muffler that "Toysrme" was referring to. I tried hunting the guy down to shoot him a pm but he must have gotten tired of all the pm's and cut out. I've noticed that his last posts on a number of threads were a few years ago back in 09. Anybody know where he's hiding now days so that I can ask him?
I wouldn't mind hearing some thoughts from those of you interested in sharing. I like Borla myself and Summits price of $99.00 seems pretty good to me especially if that's the muffler that "ToysRme" was referring to in his article that I searched and read. I don't want to simply assume that I've got the correct muffler that he was reffering to though. I'd like some confirmation/clarification if possible. Who can help with that?
When I had my Maxima I had a custom Y pipe I cant remember where it was from though at the minute. I do remember it was about 120 dollars not cheap at all. My experience with the borla xs on a 3.0 v6 was I didnt care for how it sounded. Id recomend over Borla going with a Magnaflow.
Definitely a much better, richer tone, and they dont sound ricey at all.
EDIT! I didnt see Y pipe sorry I was thinking Y pipe adapter... sorry for my own confusion. The cost would definitely be significant as Eye posted below.
this doesn't help, but back in the day- about 9 years ago now, I think. Ratko and Ekam, along with one other individual, got custom y-pipes made by ultimate performance in Toronto that were R&D'd to make more power while keeping the exhaust sound clean and clear, and I believe the cost at the time was around $800
I later picked up Ratko's pipe for a dirt cheap price and dynoed it as well. The setup seems to add approx 8whp over stock on an automatic when paired with a CAI. The gains on a 3vz would probably be similar, but more torque than hp due to the 3vz design.
These days, I would say that a good y-pipe made with even length runners would probably cost around 500 to custom make. A y-pipe with a single-bank dump (unequal headers) would probably run around $200. They are still better than the stock design, but the exhaust noise comes out raspier and the gains are not as great due to the turbulence that the unequal headers create

Just custom make your own. Piece of string to measure the lengths. Do your homework, buy a welder, do it up.

Any tube bender though wouldnt work when making headers, you will want to keep that even flow. Your standard tubing bender would really restrict any home made header to the point that stock would be better.
For instance on a 2 inch pipe, at a 90 degree bend you can lost more then three tenths of an inch at the bend. Doesnt sound like to much but when your talking flow it is.
