Locked Up Engine Tore Down in Kitchen With Pics

Greetings,

I finally pulled the motor out of my 4 Cylinder 1997 Toyota Camry.
After Removing the Crankshaft Bearing caps I found the problem immediately. I had a Spun main bearing. All of the Bearing Cap Bolts were not very tight.

I took the Crankshaft and Cylinder Head to a Machine Shop to see about having the Crankshaft Turned. The guy looked at it and rite away confirmed that it was junk. He also said looking at the Crankshaft he could tell the block was also junk.

Despite how ugly the cylinder head looked, He said it was in good shape and recomended a Valve job, Resurfacing and a general cleanup for $178

I am going to make a trip out to the junkyard, they have 2 Short blocks still in a 1996 and a 1997 Camry for $68. I just have to pull it myself, with a $10 Cherry Picker Rental Fee.

Here are some pics of the motor.

Old Block

Head

Head

Piston with seized Oil Ring and Middle Ring

Junk Crankshaft

Crankshaft Surface Grooved and Aluminum Residue

Other Parts.

Normally I would do this kind of work in my neighbors shop. But between our 2 race cars and other projects, there is just no room.

I am hoping to get a good block at the Pull-Your-Own-Part junkyard. I am going to purchase a kit off ebay that comes with new bearings, gaskets and piston rings for $122 with free shipping.

Here is a link to the kit:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260454888410

Has anyone delt with this seller before? "mizumoauto" he has a 100% rating with over 50,000 transactions.

my apologies for the long post and big pics.

~Todd

I will buy that crankshaft from you...please let me know what you would want for it...This would save me from buying another complete motor from the salvage yard.

PM me!

Hmmm. Result of poor lubrication on the bottom end? The 5S HATES to be low on oil. Looks sludge-y too.

Kitchen. Hell yes. Heck, I'm using my apartment dining room as a garage. (Honda build thread in sig.)

Good luck with the rebuild. Thats not a bad price for refreshing the head either. Sucks that a main bearing went instead of a con rod =/ I think its safe to assume you dont have a wife? lol

I said a project, not an overweight bicycle with an engine with lower compression than my Salsarita's farts.

I purchased the car for $100 from someone that got the car for free from a family friend. In the 2 years she owned it she admitted never checking or changing the oil.

Yes you are correct, no wife. I purchased a house down the street that has been empty for 8 years. I am in the process of getting it livable again. I considered doing the project over there.

I made a trip to the U-Pull_your_Parts salvage yard. They had 1998 4 cyl Camry. I jumped the fuse block to see the mileage, 261,000 miles. That engine was missing the harmonic balancer and bolt, so I could not turn over the engine. I decided to pass on this one.
Next up was a 1997 missing the top end and tranny, so it was just the block, great! I tried to turn over the engine, but I ended up loosening the harmonic balancer bolt. I passed on this also.
The next car was a 1997 that had an engine compartment fire. Everything was melted under the hood. I did not bother to check the mileage.
It came down to two 1996 models. one missing the to end with 212,000 miles. it had been sitting in the weather without a top end or hood for over 180 days. I ended up pulling a 1996 complete engine with 125,000 miles that had been at the salvage yard for a little over a week. Someone had all ready pulled the tranny, A/C Compressor and alternator. I rented the Cherry Picker and had the engine out in little over 2 hours. I got the engine for $150, but when I was paying for it a gust of wind came through the check out area and blew $20 bills out the gate and into the parking lot. I got all of the $20's back except for one. So it cost me $170.

I know this 1996 engine will not just drop into my 1997, but I think I have enough parts and motivation to get the job done. Worst case I am out $170 and my time. Since the 1996 is OBDCII I think I can make it work. A lot of the electrical connectors are the same. The head from my 1997 should bolt to the 1996 block.

I will try to keep you guys posted as to how the swap progresses, incase anyone else is considering doing this.

Here are some pics of the new engine:

I am also swapping factory stock class race car chassis. Cage Engine Tranny Rear End, etc. But I will try to give this project priority.
Wish me luck!

I would, but Shreveport is a fair piece from where I live! It should cost about $30 to ship it here, which I would pay you for, of course...just let me know...

Was looking at the cylinder heads. It seems my 1997 head still has the hole for the distributor to plug into. There is a cap plugging the hole. I may try to use my 1997 cams in thie 1996 head.

I will start a new topic with the progress of this engine swap incase anyone else tries to do this swap in the future.

1996 Head with hole for the distributor

My 1997 Head with hole plugged for the distributor

My girlfriends running 1997, looks like the hole is also plugged.

This might just work
