3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
what are some popular mods for the 2.2 camry to get more power? I dont want a turbo btw.
Lose some non-speed related weight from all areas of the car - I am up to 310 lbs of parts removal and the average person can't tell from just looking at it.
Get a header. Even a cheap Ebay Celica header with a 2.25" or 2.5" exhaust will be a nice improvement over the heavy stock cast iron stuff. You can do this with a high-flow cat and still pass emissions.
There's always the 1MZ TB upgrade (search this thread...)
It will be a long and likely frustrating road since even with all of what I've done to my Camry, the power gains are not drastic, but it IS a lot more fun to drive. Weight reduction is your friend - depends on how crazy you want to get and how far you want to go with it (search this thread again...)
For more expensive non-turbo or non-supercharger routes you can get Webcams and do a complete port and polish of the intake and cylinder head. Use 11:1 or higher ratio pistons for best results if using Webcams and/or porting...
Good luck

Bro, get a V6. That's your best option. Or a 5-speed swap.

2.2L paired with automatic, you're pretty much gonna be bolting things onto a turtle.
V6 5 speed swap. Then we'll talk.
what about someone with a 5sfe with a 5 speed already in it? Just curious how hard it would be to use a v6 with my tranny or is it not possible? I got a 95 camry coupe...sorry for the hijack
You can drop a V6 in and the S51 you have will mate up, BUT the E153 would be a lot stronger and a better platform to build with.
So which engine code is the v6 you are referring too? I wouldn't put more than headers, an intake and exhaust..anything more than that and I'd get a new car. However this v6 swap intrigued me.
The best thing I can say to wake that little 4 up if you have an auto is a 5 speed, completely night and day in the difference and or "butt dyno".
what would i need to swap a 5 speed in? I would have rather got a 5 speed but i got a good deal on this car. I just checked and i can get the trans itself for $300, so what other parts will i need?
Clutch, Flywheel, shift cables, ECU, wiring harness, pedal, shifter, 5 speed motor mounts, axles, gauge cluster, master cylinder, slave cylinder, lines, a lot of time and ingenuity!
1mz or 3vz. Go with the 1mz if you're not planning on boosting, as it's aluminum and lighter than the cast iron 3vz.
The 3VZ is only 70 lbs heavier, and it helps with the traction on the front wheels. It also is MUCH easier to turbo than the 1mz. Don't rule out the 3vz yet.
