Issues with my camry

for the past week i have been getting error code p0106 and p0105 i cant really quite figure out what is going on with the car. before i started to get the codes i was making 300+ mpg and as soon as i started to get the codes it drooped down dramatically to 200 or less. i have recently changed radiator, alternator, battery, spark plugs, wires, air filter, and do a oil change every 4 months.

When the car is cold and i try to start it, it will normally start but then shut right off. in order for me to get the car to stay on i have to pump the gas peatle until the car stays on by itself.

the car is a 1996 4 cylinder with 230k miles

Well both those codes have to do with your map sensor and yes you will lose gas mileage due to this problem. It is located on the fire wall and its in the area of the Throttle body.

The first thing that I would do is inspect your plug for corrosion. Also check for breaks in the wiring.

I would also check to make sure that there isnt any small holes or breaks in the vacumn line.

If all looks well then verify voltage at the map sensor, on idle it should be between 1-1.5 volts and up to 4.5 volts at wide open throttle.

Ill bet though if there isnt any problem with vacumn lines or wiring you have a bad, map sensor, only other culprit in this would be the TPS (throttle position sensor). With the codes you supplied though, Im guessing map.

You are in Maryland and Im in PA, I could have your a used one in the mail if you want. Its an extra I picked from the yard for free and it does work if it could help you out.

So I checked my map sensor and even checked every single hose. Theywere all fine but tonight that I was driving home I lifted up the hood to come and realize that my exhaust manifold was lite up red all over. Any one have any ideas whether the manifold is clogged up or not

can you rev up the engine RPMs? if the exhaust is clogged somewhere, the motor will really struggle on the higher RPMs. but a red-hot exhaust manifold is a classic engine is running lean sign. there is either a leak in a vacuum hose (which you checked) or something is sending a bad signal.

how did you check the hoses? visual inspection? my suggestion is grab a can of starter spray and while the engine is running, spray some around the outside of the throttle body and the various vacuum lines. if the engine changes pitch in any way - there is a leak. i would start off doing this.

if that doesnt reveal anything, start checking the MAP and O2 sensors since they control the air:fuel ratios.

Ghetto is spot on you definitely have a lean condition, and that will make your exhaust glow red, the only other condition that would cause that is a clogged catalytic convter.

As Ghetto said though your car will struggle at higher rpms to make any power so you should notice that straight away. In any event, do as Ghetto said, and I still have that MAP if you need it, wont cost you a thing either .

at the end of it all it was a clogged catalytic converter right below the manifold. go figure the car had 2 converters. Instead i sold it for $500 bucks which is what i originally paid for it 3 years ago. it was sad to let it go.
