Black Hood

Wow, there are some really nice Camrys in the picture thread! have a question on the carbon fiber/fiberglass/graphite hoods that many of you have. I know they're light weight, but what is the purpose of them? They do look pretty nice.

I have a beige '98 and there are dozens of rusty dings in the hood where stones have been kicked up. Recently I bought a black mirror and painted it beige with $8 Toyota spray paint and it turned out very nice! Thought about doing the hood, but I'd probably never get around to it.

BUT! It would look awesome black! Does the black symbolize anything? Would I be foolish to paint it black? This textured black might look cool, but probably regular paint, huh? (I bought car for $1000 and it's rusty so I'm not too concerned about messing anything up) What do you guys think?

Examples (Mine is beige so would look like the first one):

Black hoods look pretty cool on beige in my opinion...but i wouldnt do it simply because everyone these days has a black hood or CF hood.

If your going to do it right, sand the clearcoat off first, then apply your black paint with a Paint gun (not spray cans), wetsand it, and clear coat it. Then finalize with Texture wet/dry sand paper to remove any imperfections in the paint (fisheyes, nicks, etc..) and buff the shit out of it.

Do not
spray paint it though. It will look crappy, and the paint will fade, chip, and peel if you dont prep the hood correctly (removing clear coat / Wax). The Prepping is the most important part on painting anything.

Black would look cool I think if that's what your looking for. Not really functional, just for looks, but i think it would be cool.

carbon fiber hoods are used because they are light weight. painting the steel hood black IMO will look like you bought a replacement hood (they normally come black) and havent painted it yet.

Painting stock hood black = rice. Just buy a CF one or leave it alone.

x2 a stock hood in black is just rice/lazy repair. people who go CF often want to show off the carbon fiber weave so they leave it. the color means nothing.

I painted mine black just to compliment the black depo headlights.

I am now planning on wrapping it with the 3m 1080 series carbon fiber.

I'm glad you started this thread tjdean01. I was given my in-law's 00 camry in gold after she was hit in the front. It will be a task trying to get a replacement hood and bumper in the color I need, so a cf hood was an option of mine. The first pick posted does look really nice though.

I like the black hood on the beige Gen 3, really flows with the lights and black grill.
