Took it to a shop to check the charge and was told that the charge is fine, but the damper door isn't sealing and it's blowing both hot and cold air all the time. Wanted $500 to dig in and fix it.
Could it be the coolant valve on the firewall, or is there really some way the damper isn't sealing?
It's possible. The linkage (IIRC) can come undone easily.... especially on USDM XLE models with the pushbutton HVAC controls. It's annoy to dig in there to fix it, but any noob should be able to handle it. Hopefully I'm talking about the right thing here. If it's on the engine side of the firewall, I'm not sure.

It's actually the turn knob version on the 95, and I did dig in, but didn't see any detachments in front or behind the firewall. I've also put my hand on the damper valve and it is moving. What I'm not really sure of is whether the coolant valve is actually working on the inside and keeping the hot coolant from entering the heater core when the knob is set to cool.
Any idea why I can't search for "a/c" in the advanced search option of the forum?
Because there's a "/" in it. Stupid search. Try things like "blend door" or "hvac"

If the heat is on in various modes then it's probably the water valve. Maybe check the temperature of the heater hoses? If both are hot like the upper radiator hose while the heat is turned off then you know.
But if it's stuck partially open then it may be harder unless you take the valve out. As mentioned it may be the cable came loose or maybe the bracket came off the valve, etc.

The only downside is that you can't limit the search to a certain forum. So it'll snag whatever fits your search string. But even so, it works way better. No limitation on search characters, you can put quotes around things to find a specific string of words, stuff like that.
