3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My 1998 Camry front interior door handle broke, so I purchased a replacement part and installed it in place after taking off the old one, and secured the correct relocation of the two connecting rods. To my disappointment, the door latch did not open when I pull the handle, while the lock (controlled by upper connecting rod) works fine. The rod of the lower rod do move with handle pulling yet the door latch failed to release no matter the door is locked or unlocked, while the door latch can be released (opened) by pulling the exterior door handle. I further tried to pull the rod with hand all the way to the end (full range of its maneuver), but the door latch still failed to release. Can you kindly provide a clue or solution? Thanks so much in advance!
that is a bit tough to read, grammar-wise. if you un-clip the door-latch rod and pull the rod with a pair of pliers, can you get it to unlatch the door? this will help determine if the handle is at fault of the rod and assembly.

I pulled the rod (lower one, for "door latch") with hands and door-latch did not open, as I observed from below the door, while pulling the exterior handle can open it.
Thanks for your reply and I will look forward to your further opinions, and sorry fro the writing (revised).

if manually pulling the rod doesnt open the door, there is a problem with the linkage somewhere. the outter and inner handles should connect together somewhere (i think on a pivot point). follow the path of the rods for the outter handle, see how they pivot and move. then do the same with the inner and see where its not pulling or pivoting enough to release the door latch.
im wondering if a rod for the inner handle became bent (or straightened too much) and its not allowing full actuation.

Good comments and analysis, thanks ! Tried to see the inside and tried to reach as deep as possible looking for the problem, and unfortunately it is dark and too narrow to find anything.
My guess is that either the linkage is bent someplace or the little plastic connector on the latch that connects to the interior door handle is busted. Technically it could be that the little metal "L" hinge where the linkage connects to the latch has come up over the piece of metal it pushes up to open the door, but that's really unlikely. Pop off the door panel and trace the linkage, you'll find it sooner or later.

have you removed the whole interior door panel or just the handle and trim piece?
Yes for sure, that's how I replaced the damaged handle with new part, which is impossible if the whole door panel remains in place. based on your opinion, if I can not fix it in DIY manner, which type of service I should be seeking: regular garage or body repair shop? and is there a replace part commercially avaiiable, like the handle complex (with lock), for door latch that I can replace in order to fix the problem ?
Thanks sincerely again for your kind communication !
plan A:
take the passenger side door panel off. it "should" be a mirror image of the driver's side. take note of how that functions in comparison to the driver's side.
plan B:
go to a junk yard and buy used rods and a door release mechanism. if you go to a pull-it-yourself place, you can take it apart and see how it functions differently than yours. plus the parts should be really cheap.
