Air in gearbox?????

Hi all,

My 96 2.2L Camry now has ~325,000kph on the odometer (thats about 200 miles). Unfortunately its developed a bit of a crunch going into 3rd gear - mostly just when cold. The crunch has only started after we fitted a new clutch a few months ago however I feel that its more likely due to the age of the gearbox and the abuse it has suffered in the 150,000 kilometers I have owned it for (change gears quickly, ran the box dry once due to a leak etc etc).

Anyway..... I went to throw some nulon G20 manual gearbox additive in there to hopefully smooth things out a bit and when I loosened the filler nut, there was a bit of air pressure in there - kind of like opening a bottle of fizzy drink.

Is this normal? I have never experienced this before on any manual transmission I have ever worked on....

What could be causing this?

Thanks.

probably the air vent on top of transmission/differential was clogged with dirt and that's how the air pressure collected inside.

Does anyone know how to service / check the air valve thing? I can't figure out how to get it off.....

I think its blocked as the rubber cover that normally goes over it seems to have gone missing

That plastic plug should have a hole or slot that allows the gearcase to be vented to atmosphere and also keep dirt and splashed water out.

It should come off with a pull.
