Camry Buying Tips

Hello everyone,

I am looking to buy a used Camry 3rd or 4th generation. I cannot pay much so it will be very used. Can you guys tell me what to look for when I am test driving or checking out a used Corolla? Trouble spots, potential problems, etc? . BTW, I am looking for an automatic because my wife cannot drive a stick. Also, what kind of mileage are you guys getting? Are these cars easy to fix for DIY? I have a Ford Focus, and it can be tough to work on sometimes. Thanks in advance. I also posted in the Corolla forums as well. I can't decide between the two. I guess it will come down to price and availability. Thanks, in advance.

Really easy to work on.

Bring white paper towel with you and pull the trans dipstick a few times and get some fluid onto the towel. Trans fluid is something most people never change on any car. Thats what usually sends them to the junker.

Newer cars use fluid that is changed at 100k+ miles just for this reason. Which ever car you get, drop the trans pan and change the fluid first. Great MPG with the 2.2, its not to powerful but not bad.

easy to work, inexpensive to fix, look for oil and tr, fluid leaks, dead shocks.
gen 4 is bullet proof. still very popular and bring good money at resale.

Thanks for the info. It is very helpful. My next purchase will be my first Toyota. Actually, my first non-American car. I'm sure I will not be disappointed.
