4th Generation a140e trans and torque converter question

well im pretty new to this forum ive been reading and researching alot of other posts but ive got some issues with my 98 2.2 camry. heres some back story; the motor was blown due to cracked radiator got to hot and blew a rod out the block, this thing got hot.(i didnt do it car was stolen got it back two days later all messed up) so anyways got a used motor online put it in kept the trans because i thought it was ok-wrong lol. the trans would shift ok at higher speeds but at lower speeds from takeoff i had to put it near 4000rpms do go anywhere, although reverse always worked eventually it didnt go forward at all im wondering if i installled the torque converter wrong who knows the trans had this really bad smell to it. so pulled the motor again got a trans from the local junkyard unsure if its good but hoping also i pulled it from a 94 camry 2.2 but as far as ive read here it should fit my 98 seems to so far at least,

my issue right now is lining up the torque converter notches to the trans pump, they wont line up! so when i go to bolt the trans to the motor it dosent want to fitnot enough room in the bell housing probably due to things not lining up. its the same converter from my old motor and trans not sure if its even good either the large spline hole spins somewhat freely although slightly eaiser in one direction. any ideas on how to fit it together or any other thoughts lol i could use some advice as this thing is driving me crazy been working on it for 5 or 6 weekends straight putting everything back together

sorry for the long post!

Was it the old TC going into the "new" transmission? Marshall lists two different part numbers for the A140E transmission assemblies for the two cars. I'm not sure what the differences are.

yeah it was and i figured out that was my problem. i couldnt fit the tc on the tranny because when i installed it before it was on the motor first. now ive learned you must line it up on the tranny first. so anywasys the spline slots on the tc were stripped causing it not to fit. so i got another tc and it all fit together. im still having a few other issues though like when i shift from park to reverse or park to drive it clunks into gear and it takes a few seconds to get there. once in gear everythings fine though. might be because i have a high idle not sure why that is either lol

a clunk? you dont think it could be the mounting bushings? think maybe it could be the shifter adjustment linkage? does it do this when switching between each gear L2DNRP ? but when its in drive it shifts the gears normally.

Looks like the different versions of the A140 use the same converter, with 9" bolt hole radius, 6 pads, 8mm bolts and 26 splines.

See if the problem with shifting into D/R goes away with a rebuilt converter. There should be one where the transmission came from, or check with Transtar Industries. I think the junkyard one will be a lot less. The mounts can cause the clunks too, so check those too.

sorry about the delayed reply but anyways figured out that the problem was my throttle body, im not exactly sure why but my car was idling high and thats why it shifted hard, it would be like trying to shift out of park while your reving it up to like 2000 or 2500 rpms lol. so i swaped it out for the throttle body that was on my old motor and now it works much better, not perfect but ill live with it.
