How do I get rid of the squealing noise from brake shoes?

I'm not sure if I'm the only one with this issue, but I think I'm due for break change soon due to rotors starting to vibrate going down the mountain passes, 8 and 9% grades...

But since I've had the car it makes the most high pitched squealing from the break shoes (back breaks). Most often during cold and rainy days at start up. I've had it checked out by everyone and apparently they are fine...but rusted. I've had them sprayed off twice with some sort of compressed air break cleaner....had tons of rust 'smoking' from them.

Wondering if I should think about getting those changed or leave them?

Make sure you clean as much rust off as you can off the backing plate. Theres a lip the rides over the edge of the drum and it rusts up and will cause funky noises.

Good drum matienece is to pull the e brake several times every couple weeks and every couple years take them off and spray down liberally with brake cleaner. Also using hammer to pound off loose rust off drum and backing plate to prevent weird grinding noises.

Doing this ive gotten almost 100k out of my current Akenbono shoes, and they have plenty of material left. Most city driving to top it off as well.

Each backing plate for the rear drums has 6 points that the brake shoes ride on. Those 6 points need to be lubed with a high temperature disc brake grease or some other type of high temperature grease. If this is not done you will get that noise you are hearing. This can be done with the brake shoes still on the car. Use a slotted screw driver to pry the shoes away from the backing plate just enough to slip a bit of sand paper in there to sand off the rust on each of those 6 spots. Then while still holding the shoes away from the backing plate, apply a dab of the high temperature disc brake grease to each of those 6 spots. Just be carefull not to apply so much grease that it get's on the braking surface of the shoes as you remove the screw driver holding them away from the backing plate. Try this and see if it eliminates the noise.
