3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I use a obd ii scanner on my 94 camry to read the live data, yup, 94 1mz has obd ii port behind the coin cover.
it show the coolant temperature at 181F while i was driving on high way, and once in a while, it goes to 185F, when i came down to local traffic it stay at 185F sometime goes to 187F
the fan on the radiator always running once the engine started, once in a while it will spin faster.
i've also check my cousin's 2002 camry v6 se, the coolant temperature is at 194F
is mine close to the normal operating range? or running cooler?
the gauge on dash on my 94 is always lower than 1/2 midpoint.
I think the fact that your rad fans run all the time explain why your ECT reads lower temperature. do you have electric or hydraulic fans on it?
Your rad fan switch (there is 2 of them on V6) might be unplugged or bad or else and so causing the rad fans to run all the time.
my '02 1mz-fe runs at 87C/188F while driving on highway and lightly above 90C/194F when stopped for a short time (gets higher the longer it's parked which is normal, eventually compensated by rad fans kicking in when needed, usually around 96C/205F).

The 02 still uses the 180 deg thermostat. So if the car is driven on the highway (or with sufficient cool air flow over the radiator), the cooling system temperature should be around 180 deg.
I never checked what the ECT temperature is when running some time on highway
I just checked how it drops from city driving stop and go when I entered highway and accelerated (it dropped to 87C, haven't monitored it further LOL )
anyways bronzemaxell's ECT at full stop seem a little low? bellow 190F? kind of unusual on gen4 if you ask me...
I believe that is right what you say John.
Only thing I am worried about as per bronzemaxell's car is why his rad fans run all the time at low speed... mine do not run at all when not needed, gen3 vs gen4 difference?

94 camry v6 might be the only 1mz engine that uses power steering fluid to drive the radiator fan, there is no sensor switch on the radiator, there is ECT sensor and ECT sender unit near the neck of the coolant /radiator cap. i've seen all other 1mz uses electric fan.
i think 93 v6 also uses hydraulic fan, but i am not sure
hydraulic fan always spin, it will spin faster or slower depend on the temperature
unlike the electric fan that can do on and off.
like i mention earlier, at highway 65mph ect is 181F, local 185 to 187F, it doesn't fluctuate much, and never go beyond or below that range. ECM didn't complain about engine running cooler than other 1mz, no check engine light, no pending code, O2 Sensors voltage around 0.5 to 0.7V if i step on gas pedal on highway, and if i let go the gas pedal, it goes to near zero.
can't compare my 1mz-fe (electric fans) to hydraulic fans, but I think you're good then.
the fact that fans spin all the time makes the difference in coolant temps IMO, electric setup doesn't do that.
I wouldn't worry much about it unless temps start dropping deeper down.

I don't know if Bronze's cousin's 2002 was measured parked or not. But it's running hot if it does this at highway level cruising or with good airflow over the rad.
The 94 looks like doing its job however. But with a properly working Gen 4 I think it should still be around 180 (except on suspect sludge makers maybe?).
But if the rad warms up on a hot day or under load then I would think the system temp will go higher.

my cousin has the gen 5, 1mz, he called me and said he got the check engine light on. so he drove to me house, parked with engine running, while i was at at, i also saw his ect read 194F, but i was mainly checking for the code, he got P0430, hopefully it is a cheap fix, erased code, didn't come back yet.
