3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
A few weeks ago I decided to replace the standard steel wheels from my 2000 Camry CE 5S-FE and bought a set of Motegi 16x7 FF7 brand new from Summit. I picked up a set of BF Goodrich 205/55R/16 touring t/a tires from Sam's Club. The original size tires were 195/70R/14 Michelin Harmony which I had no problems with. When I drove home for the first time with my new wheels I get vibrations when I approach highway speeds 60+ mph. I feel most of it on the steering wheel and some around where I sit. I took it back to Sam's Club to get them rebalanced. The guy said the front right driver side was off half an ounce. Took it home and still vibrations. So I took it to another shop and said the front right driver was off half an ounce. Took it home and still getting vibrations. Took it back to Sam's and told them the issue. They replaced the front tires with a new set, but when I drove home, vibrations still occur.
I thought about buying a set of hub centric rings but I was told that would not help. I never had aftermarket wheels before so is this something to expect or is there something else going on?
Motegi ... another camry owner from NJ had those wheels and same/similar issues, he had hub-centric rings though ... and no luck with that either ... just saying ...
good luck with solving this one...

Sounds like you got ahold of that guys old wheels. You'll likely have to replace that front right wheel.
You can balance a football but it still won't roll right.
I looked up that thread about the other Camry with the same wheels. The only difference is his vibrations still occurred when he put his steel wheels leading the possibility that his struts could be bad. Tomorrow I'm going to put on my original wheels to conform they are fine. If they are fine which I'm 99% certain they are then I'm going have to figure out what to do with the Motegi wheels and the tires.
I will try the hub centric rings first before I return them. I haven't tried rotating them at different corners, but I will do that and see what happens.

Put in the hub centric rings, I felt an improvement but still get a little vibration. Its not as bad as before so I will leave the wheels on.
Does the little bit of remaining vibration "smooth out" after driving the vehicle for a bit? If so then that is normal due to the tires having sat over a period of time and becoming somewhat lobsided from sitting otherwise you may still have a problem of sorts.
My tires behave in the manner that I've described. Some brands/models are worse than others at doing this.
well, most tire manufacturers claim it takes up to 500 miles of both slow city driving with cornering and highway driving to break-in the new tires. they comes from factory covered with some wax, lubricants and other stuff preventing rubber from going bad when stored on shelf.
so as per new tires, give them a few hundred miles of driving under different conditions.

I wonder if something else is going on here? I know nothing of the relative quality or regular outcomes of aftermarket wheel setups, but.. I just bought a set of 17x8", OZ's from a friend that had them on his G35 Sedan, before he got a G37 Coupe. These are absolutely the smoothest wheel/tire combo I have ever had on the car. If I were guessing, I might even say that they were smooth as silk right up to speeds that no person should ever drive on a freeway. No hub centering rings, 40% worn tires, and my car started with little 15 inchers.
Just a thought.
