3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I'm working on an amp and sub install in my 99 Camry LE. This is my first time doing this particular install, but I've replaced the speakers and stock receiver with aftermarket stuff so I have some experience with wiring etc.
My question is, if I want to wire the turn-on lead for my amp to the cigarette lighter, which wire do I crimp it to? There are four wires. Pink w/ blue stripe, white w/ black stripe, green, and black. I need to know which of these is hot when the ignition is on.
Well you've replaced the headunit with an aftermarket one, so there SHOULD be a remote wire incorporated in the harness. They're usually blue, and labeled. If not, you can always tap into the yellow wire (I think...)
I didn't have a harness for my aftermarket receiver so I cut off the factory harness and crimped each individual wire to it's corresponding one on the receiver. Do you know what color the wire for the remote turn-on for the stock receiver was?
Yeah I know. I was 16 when I did it. Anyways, what's done is done. It would be really simple if I could find out what wire on the cigarette lighter is hot when the ignition is on. Those wires are more accessible and it would be easier to run the amp's remote turn-on wire from there too.

You shouldn't tap it into the cigarette lighter cause the load on the wire is just for the cigarette lighter. Best thing to do is to t-tap it into the blue wire coming from the back of the radio! That's the ONLY place you should put it on! Anywhere else is just asking for blown fuses!

Ok, so the blue wire that is coming from the back of my receiver that is labeled AMP REM MAX 0.3A (I'm assuming this is the remote turn-on wire.) is not connected to anything. Somehow my receiver still turns on and works fine. I'm not sure what I did, but I'm just looking for a safe place to crimp my remote turn-on for my amp.

Yes that one! That's to turn on the amplifier when the radio turns on! If you don't have an amplifier the blue wire doesn't need to be connected to anything! That is the safest and best place! Make sure to use butt connectors and wrap it in electric tape so it doesn't ground cause that's a positive wire! I KNOW this will work as I've installed countless radios stock AND aftermarket of Most brands!
