Can you see why I lost oil pressure? Wonder how often this happens, and why?

I'm not sure I see what you're talking about. Did your oil pump spring a major leak? From what I can see of your crankcase it looks like you've got some sludge issues . . .

The oil pump gear is off center. Looks like the bearing just fell out. Tons of metal shavings in there!

Yep! Ate a clean 1" hole in the center of the pulley! I quit driving right after I lost oil pressure.... Should have replaced the oil pump when I replaced the water pump a few months back

Does a new pump even come with that pulley or is it another part? Never mind it does come with it. At $100 bucks it might be a good idea to replace with the timing belt . How many miles do you have on the car.?

The new pump I bought (~$120 from AutoZone) didn't come with a new pulley. It was a seperate OEM purchase from Toyota for ~$30.

The pulley just has a slotted 'D' hole in the middle that slides over the pump shaft. Still wondering how that could have happened...

Plenty of life left in that oil pump.

Hopefully the main bearings at least are okay. I'd be worried about metal circulating through the engine, are you going to toss in a new oil pump and see how it runs? Yea the new pumps usually come complete with everything including the drive gear.

Oh wow, I definitely see it now. How many miles on the engine, and do you know if the pump was ever rebuilt? Did you notice any noise from the bearing before this happened?

My car has about 160k on it, but this motor was installed last year, and Im not sure how many miles it had on it. Judging from the sludge buildup, I'd say the previous owner wasn't religious with the oil changes.

Looks like the original oil pump. I replaced the water pump a few months ago....wishin' I had replaced the oil pump while I was in there.

I see. well that's a mystery motor so all the timing maintenance should have been done all together on it.

if there is no other oil leaks, maybe you run a sea foam treatment through it to clean up the varnish and sludge?
