3rd Generation 1994 Camry - Transmission Issues

New to the Site, but an active member on some truck forums out there so hopefully some of the Toyota Guru's can help out. (If you need F-150 help let me know)

I've read a bunch of posts similar to my problem, but would like somebody to weigh in on my specific problem

Here are the details.

1994 Camry XLE v6 Automatic Trans. 140k miles

Fluid Dirty Brown - Smells burnt - Level OK

Check Engine Light on, Flashing O/D light.

Won't go forward.

Will go in reverse, however it feels extremely sluggish and barely moves when the gas pedal is depressed 1/2 way.

Reading on here, Burnt fluid is always a bad thing for obvious reasons. Also it appears that the Shift Solenoids are bad and that could be the problem.

Here is my question to you guys:

1) Replacing the shift solenoids is no big deal, I can do it myself. However, is it worth it to put the money into it if there could be a friction problem inside the trans ie, sink a few hundred dollars just to have it lay and egg on me next month.

2)I'll get the code pulled tonight, I followed the instructions on here to pull the codes by watching the Check Engine light flash, however it wouldn't work for me. Read on here that some 94's and 95's can only be checked with an OBDII reader (guess they were prepping for the release of the OBDII connector) and I'll have to borrow or purchase one tonight when i get home from work.

Thanks in advance guys, please let me know if there is any additional information you need to hook me up.

the 94 camry v6 has obd II socket behind the coin holder, it is located at left side of the steering column, the coin holder have to be remove to see it, just pull the coin holder down, and squeeze both sides of the coin holder to pull it out.

i think any obd ii compliant reader can read the code from 94 camry v6.

Yeah i did see that, I'll hopefully be borrowing one from the auto parts store tonight to check it out. It is just around the corner from my house so I'll get the code pulled and drop it off. Hopefully it will shed a little more light on my problem.

Thanks!
