EGR modulator filter material

I cleaned the filter in my EGR modulator today, with compressed air, & set it aside. Later when I went to install it again, it had blown away - been pretty gusty here today. I searched everywhere, but no luck. I called the dealer to see if they sell the filter or filter material - no luck. They want to sell an entire new modulator unit for nearly $90 plus tax. So does Autozone. CarQuest sells breather filter material that I can make my own filter from.

My question - is this ok to do, or is there something special about the OEM filter in the modulator?

Thanks.

The filter is just there to collect Excess Debris in the Emission system. you should be fine using an aftermarket filter material.

OR

Go to the salvage yard and grab a new modulator

online dealer sell new modulators at around $50, no tax. if you had black dots on old filter than likely diaphragm in bottom of modulator or passageways might be dirty, clogged or restricted and it's hard to clean them.

or try one from salvage yard.

EGR modulator filter material

Thanks, everyone. I found some Fram filter material at Kragen's and cut a piece to fit. After all that I found the old filter! Anyway, it's good to know that I can use other material. I tested the modulator by blowing compressed air thru it according to the manual, and it seems fine, so won't replace it.
Thanks again for your quick responses!
