Question Need Help... no lights on trunk work..

I have a '98 Camry that has taillight, license light and backup light issues. The combination lights (brk/tail) work fine. But I am getting no power at all to any light socket that is on the trunk lid itself. But the light failure sensor is not sending a message to my dash idicator... Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Camru

On the 98'; the taillight failure lamp only monitor on the two outer stop lamps and the third brake lamp. If everything on the trunk lid has failed (reverse, tail, and license plate), most likely the ground near the hinge is cut or broken. That part of the wiring is put through a lot of movement. But check all fuses, connections, and blubs.

Okay... But while checking with a test light, shouldn't I still show voltage at the bulb sockets if I use an alternate ground source?? I have checked and found that I have no voltage at all to any sockets. And fuses under the hood are good. Is there another fuse panel located under the dash??

Thanks

There should be another fuse box inside the car, to the left of the steering wheel on the dash behind the coin tray. Remove the coin tray by pressing in on the sides and pulling it outward.

I've checked all the fuses and they are okay.. So I'm assuming that it is a connection somewhere in the system.. It just seems like it would be a fuse, relay or connector somewhere to cause these lights to all quit working.. since they are all located on the trunk lid. But I don't see anything obvious...

The next step would be to check the wires inside the trunk by the driver's side trunk hinge. Open up that loom and look for freyed or broken wires. The wires in that loom sustain a lot of flexing over the years as the trunk is constantly opened and closed. Eventually they frey and break. This is a common trouble area on all generations of Camry. Fix what you find.

Yea that's what I was thinking. I appreciate your feedback Mike. This is my nephews car I am working on. I myself am a into restoring classic cars... I will look into this loom of wires, hopefully I find the problem there. Then I can get back to getting my car cleaned up and ready for the car shows this year.

Thanks again
