95 4 cyl spongy brakes

95 LE 4 cyl....brake pedal is very soft...travels all the way down....brake operation is fine....front pads are good and fairly new...rear shoes are worn but problem has been around for quite a while even with newer rear shoes....have bled it several times with no difference....what else can make the pedal spongy like that? Thanks

If it's not air I would suspect the master cylinder as Specialmen240 suggests. Put the car in drive and apply the brake strongly and hold it, does the pedal slowly descend to the floor? Being a 95 I'd also inspect the brake hoses at the calipers for cracks and bulging when brake applied.

If you rapidly pump the brake pedal does it rise/firm up? If so it's most likely air in the system. If it doesn't then MC cups are probably leaking. But you still have to check the rubber brake hoses for swelling.

Do you have ABS?

Samething. Try rapidly pumping the pedal and see if it rises up. If so it's most likely air in the system.

ABS is hard to bleed. There is the ghetto method of activating it on gravel road and bleeding again. May not be that reliable. Or take it to the dealer to tickle the abs module.
