We'll need more details than that. What exactly is going on at startup?

start up problem

when I try starting it up when cold it starts and then turns off. If I hold the throttle open just a bit it stays running, when I release the throttle it will continue running.

My guess would be the Idle Air Control.

Yup, sounds like another sticking IAC valve. do a search on IAC, and you'll find a DIY on how to clean it. That should solve the problem. I had the same issue a little less than a year ago. I cleaned out the IAC valve, and never had a problem at startup again.

Good Luck, Have Fun, and Welcome to TN!!!

That really doesn't work for a CA car like mine, and the OP's. Our IAC valves have a slightly different configuration(extra tube). That tube allows the cleaner to immediately drain out into the engine, so it never gets a chance to dissolve the build up. I tried that method twice, and because of that tube, it just never worked. For me the best way to clean the IAC valve was to remove it from the throttle body, soak in seafoam for a few hours, brush/scrape out all the carbon build up, and reinstall.

It was as clean as a brand new part when I reinstalled it. Anyway, just something to consider.

I did try cleaning it out twice with throttle body cleaner and it still has the problem, I will try the removal method of the IAC and clean it out.
Thanks for the tip.
