3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Okay, I hate to make an oil thread as there's 10.8^100 discussions on motor oil, but this is a bit different. There's always recommendation on different brands and types of oil but the question is: Does anyone stock up on motor oil and filters in their garage? If so, how far ahead?
The reason I ask this is because O'reilly started a sale on 5qts Castrol GTX SynBlend with a WIX filter for $20. The Wix filter is the selling point for me but not sure about the GTX Synblend. Maybe it's a waste of $$ as it's only a 10-30% blend but I'm planning to buy 6 specials. (At $120 total, longer OCI with full synthetic starts to sound better)
Motor oil usually has a shelf life of about 2-3 years when stored properly, or at least their MSDS says so
I have stored Mobil 1 longer than that and can't appreciate a difference. I also have 5L jugs of Pennzoil Platinum and dino Quaker State.
I also stocked a 10ct case of Toyota tall oil filter - my two cars share them. I get a discount buying a case and they aren't that much more expensive.

I stocked up on Motor Oil in the past. Years ago, Schuck's Auto Parts would have a coupon for a case of Castrol GTX that brought it down to like $1.79 and then down to like 99 cents a quart if mailed in the rebate form.
I took advantage of this offer for years as both my Camry and Maxima used the same oil, I would have like 2-3 cases of Castrol in the garage at any given time. When I needed more oil, I simplify looked for the coupon in the Sunday paper again.
Eventually that coupon offer was discontinued and I stopped stocking so much oil.
Wish motor oil was still so cheap.

I am getting Synblend and the Wix filter from O'reilly for the quest. Earlier this week I got 7qts. of Mobil 1 Super Synthetic for the 07 avalon since it was on sale. I already have a Toyota filter for it.
I used Synblend for 4k in my 99 and it looked clean when I drained it.

Thanks for the input and that's what I'm still debating about. Currently, I have 30qts of Valvoline Durablend but with the crappy Fram filters from Autozone a few weeks ago. I could easily return them back and restock my garage with the Synblend and Wix filter. What's holding me back is the limited information on the Castrol GTX Synblend; must not be popular. But it's the newer API SN/GF-5, so it has to be better than the SM/GF-4 Valvoline right?
I will note that I have have used regular Valvoline before and it turn black early but I figure that means its working and cleaning. But on my last oil changed, I had only regular GTX on hand and used it. I will say, after 2000 miles, the oil is still goldish and I haven't top it off. That worries me because I usually have to top off the Valvoline every 500 miles.
Maybe I should just change my oil regularly and stress over something else.
There is usally always a DIY promo in either Autozone (usually with shitty FRAM filters), Advance Auto (almost always option to $2 upgrade for PureOne filter), Pep Boys (varies greatly) and other chains
I used to do that.
On top of that you can always buy a case of filters online (amazon, ebay, dealer, etc.) and then get a full synthetic oil jug from Walmart's at some unbeatable price
Now I usually do this
BTW, walmarts sells 5qt jugs of Mobil1 Full Synthetic HM oil (5w-30 or 10w-30) at $24.50. I use it along with a case of OEM filters I got online ($3.99 each)
Stocking up with oil for years makes no sense (exceeding shelf life decreases its specs).

Yeah return the stuff you got from AZ. I wouldn't stock up on these oil deals, O'Reilly always has them. They don't offer crappy filters like AZ, so you will always be getting a good oil and filter no matter if you want dino, blend or synthetic oil. I think 2 of the Castrol/Wix deals would be good. Do you plan on using synthetic on future oil changes? They regularly have Valvoline Synpower and a M1 filter in their ads. Not this one though. Its Castrol Edge and a K&N.
And Castrol Synblend should be fine, I had no problems.
in general i usually keep 2 of the 5 quart jugs on hand along with 2-4 single quarts, incase i need top offs. I dont really buy cases upon cases at the time, like i read people do on Bobistheoilguy. One thing i will stock up on are oil filters, keeping maybe 5-8 ( sometimes more) on hand so whenever i see a deal on the napa gold, or the pure one by purolator i will pick up a couple to add to the stash

Today, the guys at Autozone didn't like me returning 30 quarts of Valvoline. I stocked up on only 3 O'reilly special so I'm good for the next 12K. I'm sticking to my 3-4K OCI with 5W-30 dino/blend as I just can't convince myself to go full synthetic, just not yet.

I remember reading how one member on BITOG claimed he had 160 qoutes in his garage. Overkill? Yea. I actually have two Napa Gold filter that I got on the 2 for $10 but not for my car. I try to see if I can exchange it for my Camry tomorrow.

I remember doing the same thing. Started with auto parts store's special than move to Walmart oil/Napa filters combo but back to Special.
The cost on the DIYs is the same at most dealerships here. Nissans charge $20 for Castrol GTX and an OEM filter so I let them care of the Pathfinder and Versa. Same thing at Toyota too; GTX with OEM filter for $20. But I just can't let another person work on my personal car. You know that feeling.
The Castrol I just got are GF-5/SN so the oldest they can be is 8 month as the standard was released in Oct. 2010.

yeah, there is nothing wrong with going with some current DIY oil change promo from local store granted they include some decent filter with it (WIX, PureOne, Mobil1, etc.) and not some STP/FRAM crap. Bosch is usually good too (used it on GM 3.8L with no problems), but haven't gone this way on Toyotas ever.... Bosch parts don't like Japanese cars and vice versa for some reason.
I know the feeling exactly, I freak out when someone else touches anything in my cars

Hahaha, I could imagine. What oil did you get? I got Castrol GTX HM which is now "PART SYNTHETIC", now I understand why the Synblend and GTX HM where the same price.
Yesterday I did an oil change on the 07 avalon, I hate messing with the filter element. And another lovely thing was the Toyota filter had the wrong drain plug o-ring on the filter element so I had to reuse the old one. The beast took 6.6qts instead of specified 6.4qts.

Yeah it is, I just checked courtesy nissan and the have a coupon for a $25 oil change. I didn't take it to the dealer since I have a few things to replace besides doing an oil change. I have to do spark plugs on the van at 105k. That is going to suck. It's weird how the Toyota 3.5 takes 6.4qts, while the Nissan 3.5 takes 4.25qts.
even toyota sends out some $29.99 coupons for oil change from time to time (need to be on customer list), so if you like dino stuff you could go for it and get the OEM filter included in price.
I never did that, because I despise my local closest dealership, they always fuck something up and are totally unreliable.
