springs

im sure theres been a post about this, but im too lazy to look, plus im new and not familiar with this site, BUT....

main topic: lowering springs on stock struts

car: '01 with 145k (sags a little)

I read around on other forums, people say it will blow the struts, people say they've been running them for years without problems.

I could afford new struts but if i can get away with springs til maybe december, i would love that.

SO, what do you think? and ALSO what springs would you recomend? (im looking for something around 2-3" down) but if thats not possible, im always cool with a modest drop.

you can stop reading now if you want

My logic: Before i bought the car (off my grandparents) my grandpa drove it down (because our van blew) and he had a bunch of stuff in the trunk (cinder blocks, bunch of tools, a jack, some jack-stands, etc. and the suspension was sagging hardcore. So i figured if they struts can handle being that low, with all that weight, they could handle the lowering springs, at least in the rear. So i think the saggy stocks could handle the springs. but i am just a stupid teenager, so what are your thoughts?

thank you,
Zach

if you did search, youd find out there are no springs that drop that much offered for our cars.

if thats your "logic" you are gonna have a very frustrating time modding your camry. its bass akwards. if your struts are blown...you HAVE to fix them before even thinking about putting on lowereing springs. even then, you dont want to roll lowered on stock shocks, especially if ya wanna go that low.

heres one tip for ya though, as you do the proper research that a "stupid teenager" has time to do. keep in mind that, for whatever reason, the brand quality seems to drop with the spring. the lower the drop offered, the lower the quality and the greater the need for good shocks.

using stock springs on lowering struts (e.g. Tokico) is a no no as struts & springs won't fit each other right.

but ... if you really want you could use some mild lowering springs (e.g. Eibach or Tein maybe) with stock shocks with not much of a problem until December (probably much longer if needed). however don't quote me on this, search for confirmation that such combo works and allows parts compatibility (e.g. spring is not too short for strut, etc.).

just make sure that those struts are now blown please ... if you have more than one bounce in either of corners then struts are garbage.
