Recommend a OBD Code Reader/Scanner

What ODB Code Reader/Scanner would you recommend for a 2000 Toyota Camry? What other items or accessories would be needed to use it?

I have a check engine light that is currently on. It comes on a lot during each year. Every time, I take it to the mechanic. Each time, he fixes the engine issue and also manages to "find" many more problems. I want to take this aspect of car maintenance into my own hands.

However, some here use laptop based readers. You can get a lot more info, including fuel trims, oxygen sensor waveforms, coolant temperature, etc.
