92 camry breakdown

Hi, I am new to forum and have a problem with my 92 Camry it broke down on me this morning, [made bad noises, engine quit, and I lost anti freeze]
I am thinking it is the timing belt, the motor will turn over but sounds like it has no compression. The questions are will a broken timing belt cause loss of water/anti freeze and what are the odds of having engine damage? Motor has about 189K on it but seems to be a good car.
thanks in advance RB

Sounds like the typical water pump seizing and taking out the timing belt. If you can take off the upper timing belt cover then you can verify that. When was the pump last changed? What's the cooling system's service history?

I have no idea of any history with the car. I bought it a few months ago for a second car and really liking it. I tuned it up and changed all the filters and both axle shafts other than that I don't know much. I just hope it is a typical water pump and belt replacement. Is there a chance there could be valve damage ? How big of a job is this?
thanks RB

The 5SFE timing belt change has a book time of about 3 hours. Another hour for the water pump/thermostat/hoses/coolant fill and maybe another hour or two trying to pry out/in the oil seals without scratching the shafts . Plus some time to familiarize as you go.

There are DIYs on changing the timing belt (plus pump and oil seals):
DIY: GEN3 Timing Belt + Waterpump + Oil Seal Change - Part 1
DIY: GEN3 Timing Belt + Waterpump + Oil Seal Change - Part 2

Find others under the DIY section:
Camry FAQ ------> READ FIRST -----> Comprehensive List of Gen 3/4 INFO and DIY

So look through the DIYs and see if you can at least remove or take a peek under the upper timing cover. It should tell you the condition of the timing belt and the water pump. Verify the problem before trying to fix it.

And if you decide to dig into it I'd do a "complete" timing belt job that include the following. You can get a complete OEM timing kit on eBay from Aircabinman for about $185 shipped. Or check with ToyotaPartsMan on the forum or other online dealers for Toyota branded parts.

These engines are non-interference. So no damage as far as bent valves will happen (unless there is heavy carbon buildup). I'd also change out the radiator hoses and if possible all coolant hoses while at it. Get a new radiator cap as well. Use Toyota Red coolant with distilled water.

(an older www.rockauto.com price list for 3/5SFE)
GATES TCK199 (kit of timing belt with two pulleys and instruction) $84.79
GATES Part # K030295 PS belt $4.32
GATES Part # K050435 Alt/AC $12.12
FEL-PRO TCS45641 Cam seal $4.11
FEL-PRO TCS45920 Crank seal $6.04
BCA Part # 221820 Oil pump seal $2.71
AISIN water pump $58.79
FEL-PRO VS50304R valve cover gasket set $13.94
OE style thermostat with jiggle valve and gasket $11

I have one more question. I might start on this job this weekend could I use aftermarket parts from OREILLY or NAPA or is that not a good idea?
thanks RB

Both NAPA and O'Reilly should carry Gates belts and hoses. Ask for those. I get Fel-Pro gaskets at O'Reilly and Autozone. Check out the Autozone rewards program. So you should be fine.

Use OEM Toyota thermostat (because the Stant OE type is a special order item locally, and the typical local stats are lower grade). Toyota Aisin water pump (probably ~$90) and Toyota Red coolant (~$30) are the things you need from the dealer. You may want to pick up a new tensioner spring as well while you are there ($5 or so). It's probably not needed, but they had updated it because of some loose belt problems. So I'm not sure if you have the updated spring or not.

If you plan to get a water pump from O'Reilly get the Master Pro (~$35) with a lifetime warranty. The picture looks like a Japanese aftermarket brand, NPW. But of course the source may change at any time. This is probably the same pump under NAPA's Alstrom (a reboxed NPW), but NAPA's price is similar to Toyota's - so no sense going to NAPA when you can get an OEM pump for about the same price.

Here is another way to hold the crank and loosen the bolt:
home made tool to tighten camshaft sproket nut

Also check Autozone's free loaner program if you need a harmonic balancer puller, spark plug tube nut socket (=axle nut socket), or torque wrench. You will also need dabs of RTV for semi-circular plug joints and at the base of the cam cap when installing the valve cover gasket. Make sure to retorque the spark plug tube nuts after a few driving cycles because they like to loosen up. And if you receive the metal/rubber water pump gasket then make sure the block surface is clean and flat. If you receive the paper gasket, then buy a tube of Permatex water pump RTV, and use leftover dabs of it on the valve cover joints specified.

The following is an updated list I gathered yesterday for 5SFE (double check applications). The prices were from rockauto, so local prices will be higher:

GATES K030295 Micro-V AT Power Steering Belt $5.14
GATES K050435 Micro-V AT Alt/AC Belt $14.10
FEL-PRO TCS45920 Crankshaft Front Seal Set $5.10
FEL-PRO TCS45641 Camshaft Front Seal $3.66
NATIONAL 221820 Polyacrylate Oil Pump Shaft Seal $2.86
GATES TCK199 (1 Belt, 1 Tensioner, 1 Idler) Timing Belt Component Kit
$52.89
STANT 48278 180° w/Jiggle Pin OE Type Thermostat $10.94
AISIN WPT010A Water pump w/o housing $30.79
FEL-PRO VS50304R1 Valve Cover Gasket Set w/Spark plug tube seals
$18.26
Subtotal $143.74
Shipping about $20

Good luck and keep us posted!!!
