97 Camry passenger mirror 4-wire vs. 3-wire. . . help!

Hi all,

My friend has a 97 Camry and accidentally broke the passenger mirror off. I ordered him a new one, and it came with a 3-wire hookup . . . Black, Red, and White.

When I pulled the broken mirror off the car, it had 4 wires . . . Yellow, Purple, Purple, and Blue. Also, there was no plug, so I had to cut the wires off at the mirror.

The mirror fits perfectly, but now it doesn't have any power to it. We tried several different combinations of combining the Purple/Purple/Yellow/Blue with the Black/Red/White, but none of them worked. Any way that I can get this power mirror working, or do I need to order a different one?

Thanks!

Joe

Us built camrys have the connector further down behind the interior door panel. As for the original mirror having 4 wires, it must've been a heated mirror and you ordered a non heated mirror for a Japanese built car (connector is right at mirror). It's an xle right? I believe xle's were the only ones with heated mirrors.

Thanks for the information, everyone.

It does not appear that the passenger side mirror was a heated mirror. How do you tell? There are no special markings on the glass indicating this.

It looks like the ones with the heated replacement mirrors have 5 wires, and my old mirror only has 4, but 2 of them are the same color. But the non-heated replacement mirrors have 3 wires. Gosh, this is getting confusing.

The Camry is a 1997 LE.

I tried to pull off the door panel, and I couldn't get it to come off at all. I believe I removed all the screws, but the inside door handle still seems to be attached to something. How do you pull the door panel off this car?

Removing that door handle trim is a bit tricky - I messed up mine...
Assuming you've already removed the screw from the door handle cover, there are two clips, top and bottom of the trim on the side where the lock/unlock switch is. Just search for the pic of that trim on eBay to give you a better idea. Once that is out, everything else is held on my clips and should just pull off.

But yea, you basically need to take off the door cover to get to the mirror connector.
