Still having blue smog come out, can't figure out the source anymore.

Hey guys. So, when I first got the car, the car would blow out blue smog/smoke during start ups but will subsidize after the engine warms up for a minute but still would have a strong smell, not clean like you would from new cars.

So, I replaced the spark plugs and fuel filters thinking it's probably bad plugs and old filters.

Changed them, still had the blue smog/smoke come out when turning the car on but again, stop after a minute but the smell was now gone and had a clean burnt fuel smell.

Since that didn't solve it, I seafoamed it. Put a bottle in the gas tank and 1/3 bottle of it through the brake booster lines. Everything went normal, a lot of white smoke.

But to no avail, every time I start her up, the blue smog/smoke still comes out. I'm at a loss now. I don't know how to fix this problem and I'm wondering if you guys know.

Could it be a bad seal? Could it be a build up of gunk on the poppet valves? I don't know. I appreciate from any help. Thanks in advance.

The most common cause( of start up oil smoke) is bad valve guide seals. Have someone follow you while you drive, and let your foot off the gas pedal , you should get a little puff of smoke then too( high vacuum of closed/ partialy close trottle will suck oil past the valve guide seals).

Thanks. I'll get that checked up on my next maintenance check-up.

Blue smoke on start up is more common on these sludge maker engines. The intake seals made of a cheaper rubber (to save 50-80 cents each) can't take the heat and they harden. The same seals on Gen 3 is less of a problem.

You can try a high mileage oil or some claim synthetic oil helped lessen the start up smoke as a temporary fix.

The solution is to change out the valve stem seals. I'd recommend Fel-Pro premium seal set ($30 on rockauto, typically made in Japan) and a new valve cover gasket set with spark plug tube seals $18.26.

Don't get separate intake/exhaust seals, because this means cheap intake seals. Exhaust seals should work fine on intake (not on other engines with different in/ex valves however), but I'd just use Fel-Pro. A properly equipped shop shouldn't take more than 1 hour beyond a timing belt job to change these on an I4.
