The owners manual does a good job of describing the controls and their functions. Available at toyota.com if paper copy is lost.

the "auto lights switch" is NOT what you find in luxury cars described as "Automatic Lights".

camry has Daytime Running Lights (turning dimmed high beam lights on during day), not Automatic Lights (which is opposite, turning low beam lights on automatically at night).

DRLs should get turned off if engine is shut (or just started) while parking brake is engaged.

clean the light sensor above dash, right be windshield, perhaps it's not working correctly? there should be an option to turn the lights off completely on gen4 (DRL off).

So when its at the "off" position is the DRLs or Low Beams on? I remember on my aunt's corolla even though the switch at the "off" the low beams were on. That shit was annoying.
On my Avalon, its goes, Off, Parking Lamps, Low Beams, then AUTO. I just leave it at auto mode.

Gen 4 camry switch has 3 positions:

1: Low High beams on all the time, everything else is switched on automatically when it get's dark

2: low high beams again, with parking lights on. Low beams turn on when it gets dark

3: Low beams and parking light on at all times

There is no way to turn off the lights completely with the engine running. That's what "Daylight Running Lights" means, and many/most insurance companies offer you a discount for this "safety" feature.

I think, all you need to do to disable DRL is to remove one of its relays from small box by the battery. not sure which one (don't touch anything with AFR in name, it's in same box on California models, at least on Solaras).

also I think Solara has totally different DRLs than Camry does. I have an additional DRL off position on the 02 (gen1.5) solara sle stalk, and my low beams do not turn on when it gets dark (not sure if they are supposed to, doubt it as pure DRL has nothing to do with Automatic Lights at night).

Hey fenixus , how much do those boxes cost? That would be sweet to retrofit one of those

they are part of the wiring harness just like all other fuse boxes under hood with all the wiring to head lamps, fans, abs, a/c and such

only $1,400 MSRP from dealer

j/k

but if you want one, I have one from old damaged harness that I chopped up. however that box has no cover, pic in sig (connectors link) or here:

I also have another complete harness with same box, but coming from slightly different model of car (2002 camry 2.4L likely) where the box'es case is damaged, but it's still complete with all wiring. put it on ebay long time ago (harness has a few cracked or missing connectors):

Yeah all you need to do is remove the DRL fuse or relay and that will turn them off.

I am also looking to be able to disable the DRL's - the owners manual does show some fuses/relays marked DRL - but I'm unsure of the one that will do the the trick..

I do know that pulling up one click on the parking brake disables the DRL system.

The fuse/relay box in front of the battery has the DRL fuse and relays. I think it even says DRL on the fuse box cover.
